Aftermath: Population Zero - The World without Humans | Free Documentary
What would happen if, tomorrow, every single person on Earth simply disappeared? Not dead, simply gone, just like that. A world without people, where city streets are still populated by cars, but no drivers. A world where there is no one to fix bridges or repair broken windows…
After being on the receiving end of humanity for millennia, nature would finally be given a chance to take the world back.
But how would it work? How long would the skyscrapers and houses last if they were abandoned? How would suburban pets fare without people to feed them? How would the forests, the oceans and the wildlife react if there was suddenly an end to all the hunting, fishing and farming?
“Aftermath” is the astounding story of a world that humans will never see. The two-hour special examines the impact of human beings on this planet by proposing what the Earth might be like without people.

Indeed, the earth can get by without us. But we cannot survive without it. I love how this documentary was made. Though, I think it would have been better if the other continents were also discussed more and not just focus on North America and some parts of Europe. But still, thank you for this.
Vor yearMartin Rodenburg +13
It is an inescapable fact that one day, the Earth will no longer be there. We MUST (and I think we will) learn to survive without it. Nothing in this documentary suggests that we can't. If it did it would paint a very negative picture of humanity. The Earth is the cradle of humanity, but mankind cannot stay in the cradle forever.

Many things are wrong here. Plants, trees etc are underrated, animals are overrated. Many speces will die out without humans. The experience with ghost towns show that plants are taking over the cities fast and are the main element to destroy them. It happens within 100 -- 200 years. Animals remain rare. Animals are depending on humans more than we usually think. The totally wild, humanless areas (Siberia etc) lacks animals too.

A fascinating insight into the planet without humans. Although it covered too much of North America and not enough of the rest of the planet like what happened to the Artic and Antartic, Australia and New Zealand to name a few places. More Documentaries like this please.

Nothing would happen to the pole areas, there'd just be no people there. Exactly the same would happen to Antipodean cities as is shown happening in American ones. The same process would happen all over the world.

Europe would become a lot colder, perhaps by 10-20 degrees Celsius, and the entirety of Europe would become a massive forest, there would be hardly any flat land just a giant woodland, it would have alot of wildlife probably bears. lions and other zoo animals that would evolve. Africa would thrive without humans, animals that are on the brink of extinction like cheetahs, leopards, elephants, rhinos, etc... would be roaming Africa in the millions without human hunting, also a lot of trees would grow, central Africa would become an extremely lush and thriving jungle, whilst southern Africa would remain a savannah but alot more animals and nature would be there. The Amazon rainforest in South America would eventually regrow to its pre-human size and just like Africa, animals like jaguars and capybaras would roam the Amazon rainforest in the millions without human hunting creating a lush thriving first full of wildlife, if we were to visit the Amazon 200-300 years after our disappearance, it would like something from a different planet. Asia would also thrive without us, not really the Middle East, I'm talking about the tropical places of Asia like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand etc... basically what happened in Africa and South America would happen there, the orangutan population in Indonesia would thrive without us, and the Borneo rainforest would be fully restored to its pre-human size within 300-400 years. Australia would become a heaven for reptiles, it pretty much already is, but if we fully disappeared from Australia it would become like something from a dinosaur movie, just like the Amazon, if we visited Australia 200-300 years after our disappearance, it would look like something from a different planet. Antarctica would cool down significantly just like Europe, and all of its ice that we melted would eventually form again, so basically Antarctica would be alot bigger without us, and the polar bear would also be saved from extinction, it would revive itself and number in the millions without us, same with penguins and seals.

I visited a place left to nature to take over some decades ago. Was one of the most interesting experiences I ever had, there was a tree growing inside a house. Most of the walks and roads couldn't be recognized, except for some light posts tumbled around. Really fascinating. Most became nature, absolutely. Some buildings left, but usually everything became green again

Hi people, is inside a park in my hometown, Uberlândia in Brazil. There's no pictures of the abandoned part online, is a part of the park left to the mother nature to take care of many years ago. Part of the zoo and the old buildings was deactivated because the park got bigger, so nature took over.
Vor yearDormices +32
I think the narrator has made it a more romantic story than it probably would be in life. The radioactivity has been vastly underplayed, the fate of plants and creatures that require assistance to survive far away from their natural habitat, simply won't make it. The management of the land has gone on for so many centuries we have forgotten how dramatically it could change. In the UK alone vast swathes of lowland would return to the marshland it once was, hilly areas would at first be overun with rabbits but they would soon be eaten and the woodland would return with the fringes deeply entangled with brambles which would be hard to penetrate by some animals. Species numbers would change as mice and suchlike would be more easily hidden from view. Would owls and scavengers survive so well? Oil rigs would self destruct and pollute the seas with oil and shore based reactors such as Fukushima spread heavy radioactivity throughout much of the oceans. Anyone who has seen a garden go wild will know how plenty of plant speciies would be suffocated. Walls and fencing would trap or restrict animals. What with the marshes, mile upon mile of forest and, bleak mountainous areas, how many flowers would we see disapear for all time? Storage lagoons of vile chemicals would eventually escape and pollute land, sea and seep down into aquifers. Fires rage unchecked taking out large swathes of unmanaged woodland.

I watched a similar documentary many years ago - one of the main things that it was thought would survive then was the floppy disk (mobile phone in this video). But of course the floppy disk was also useless for similar reasons. Two issues with this documentary - 1) I don't think the window glass would fall out of buildings that soon - most windows of high rise buildings these days are sealed in double glazing plastic frames (when one thinks of the high rise high density social accommodation of circa 70s - some of those horrendous towers still exist and I suspect the landlords don't bother with checking the state of the windows and yet one does not tend to hear of panes of glass falling to earth. 2) the pyramids etc in Egypt will survive the longest - the desert storms will bury the temples etc under tons of sand once again thus preserving these sites. Otherwise an excellent documentary - great graphics and hurrah for mother earth.

Interesting doco. I was actually looking for (and still am) the 6 part series on Life After People. A lot of this seems to have been taken from that series. When they were talking about the packs of wild dogs roaming the cities 30 yrs after humans, they showed a dog with a collar - after 30 yrs there wouldn't be any dogs that had known humans left. It would be a minimum of 3 generations since any dog knew humans.

I also think about pets in collars and harnesses. Adult animals would eventually loose theirs but pups and kittens would die horrible deaths.

Great documentary! I think that it would have been nicer if our disappearance had been anticipated so that all machines would have been turned off, cars parked, planes landed, factories shut, zoos closed and animals released back into the wild and pets being able to easily go outside and back in if they wanted with food and water readily available. We have caused enough destruction to the entire planet and to the environment and have treated animals horribly by our presence so I just thought that our disappearance should have been a relief for the planet , not cause more catastrophies.

I wonder how long it would take for our existence to completely disappear. I suppose the plastics buried would be a clue. Plastics are so enduring, unfortunately. This is a fascinating scenario. When I can't sleep I sometimes try to imagine what my surroundings would look like if every one were gone; after one day, then one month, one year, and so on. Ultimately, another human obsession with death.

Proof? "Life after people" delved deeper into the subject over 2 series of episodes AND it started airing 3 months before this show so it could just as easily be the actual inspiration...and yes, it has the same atmosphere (with a little less of the doom and gloom this one suggests) so yes it could be. Additionally most of the inspiration for TLOA came from George A Romero's zombie movies and similar apocalyptic horrors...I would hazard a guess that some inspiration came from The Walking Dead also, but at the start of production that show hadn't started airing (though it had by the time the game was released...as I say, SOME inspiration)

I was thinking about the events that would take place as I watched the documentary, and I tried to anticipate the results as the documentary unfolded. I hit the nail on the head for most of the video. However, there is one very major industrial endeavor that would almost immediately break down and impact the terrestrial and especially the marine environment in several areas of the globe. That endeavor is the extraction of petroleum. Imagine oil wells uncontrolled and no longer maintained: after pressure control systems fail, blowouts would occur and result in massive spills both on land and in the sea. On land, blown out wells may catch fire and burn releasing not just the oil but clouds of hydrocarbon particles and gasses. No one knows how long they would burn. In the ocean, oil rigs that did not immediately blow out would eventually break down and start spewing crude into the sea. It would make the the Deepwater Horizon disaster look like a minor drip. The same for gas rigs. There are gas flows burning in the Land of Fire in Azerbaijan that have reportedly burned for 4 thousand years and still going strong. For nearly 50 years, the Door to Hell gas crater in Turkmenistan has been burning. Including the results of blown out wells would have been an interesting addition to this excellent film.

Who else has seen this documentary more than 10 years ago when it was released, time goes quickly, someone must make a new documentary about this theme!

The one I saw was much older than this one and they had made things much easier for the animals, this one though points out to more dangers for animals that man has left behind. But I still believe that these cities may not survive this long as predicted here. most of the worlds major cities are fire traps that will burn to cinders if left to its own devices,
Vor 3 yearsHajar Renate Midbrød +2
wow .. I didnt realize it was that old ... Even now in covid 19 times , The skies have cleared and people staying at home has given nature back its rightful place , animals roaming big cities due to less people .....

@jum rogan I saw one in I think the 70's, it was called "A world without us" or something close to that. I remember seeing it, but not a lot of the details. Would like to see it again.

Taste Like More There's no point in doing so, the "end" (for that is what it is) result should- if true- show exactly the same thing. You don't need hundreds of snazzy, fast-moving, high tech films to get across an important message. You must be the type of person who rented 15 videos a week when they first came out.

@Taste Like More - The one that I’ve seen was a show called “Life After Humans” from like 2009 ish

A very enjoyable and thought provoking documentary. Of course, natural order will prevail, once humanity ceases to exist. I only hope whatever comes after us, will take better care of our beautiful blue planet. 😊

Everything turns to dust in the end. We seem to have this childish notion we must continue indefinitely. We should respect the planet and each other, but at some point it will all end and to try a prevent this is futile. Enjoy it while it lasts.

It's all taken directly from another documentary in the 2010s. They just sharpened the quality of the video and put way worse narration over it.

Made me realise that mother nature is even stronger than I thought. So quiet and slow yet so powerful. No matter what we do we can never win over her. Life on Earth was there before us, it will thrive after we're gone. We are just a phase to our planet.

When I first moved to Colorado I was excited to get into the industry, I came prepared. I had a thousand or so seeds comprised of 4 strains that my friend and I developed in Florida during the early 2000’s. I’m talking stabilised feminised seed stock thats consistency with little deviation in phenotype and always female. It took years of work and spreadsheets but it was all worth it. I made it to the promised land I just need to fill out some forms have my small facility inspected and we’re good. Not so fast. Unfortunately for me I arrived in Denver 1 year before they changed all the laws, laws that clearly are beneficial to large corporate growers and dispensaries. People who can reach in and pull a million bux out of their pocket and not blink twice. This decision by the state to create an overly complicated system that suddenly excluded anyone with any felony record for drugs, and I’m talking simple possession. They now required that all product from seed/clone to dried product had to be tracked from seed/clone to finished product, software that could track that sort of metrics didn’t even exist. They required not only cameras but the Controllers and hard drive backup has to be in a secured room that must be inspected by the police department. Even the security room has to have a camera both inside and outside the room. Needles to say, I had to shutter my new operation 2 months after I finally got all my inspections and paperwork approved under the old system. What all this has done is hurt small owners and worse yet it’s destroying the plant it’s self. Commercial retailers/growers in Colorado are hands down the worst I’ve ever seen when it comes to strain selection. You go into the shoppes and there’s strains that you never heard of, never heard of them because they are convinced that then need to always be offering a new fresh product that no one else had. They do this by “pollen dusting”, one strain to another and coming up with a clever/ironic name. They don’t stabilise the seed stock nope just cross this with this make seeds the. Use those seeds that haven’t been stabilised to make this “new strain” worse yet they mix those together and before ya know it the genetics begins to fail not to mention do this enough and you have 30 types of product to sell that all looked taste and provides roughly the same high. Denver has gone from having couture Bougie bud growers that supplied dispensaries with premium strains that with nothing but the best nutrients harvested when the tricombe were either amber or milky and then cured for 6 months or longer for a full smooth rich taste. To what we have now, over priced commercially grown bud with questionable genetics that are usually never flushed fully, and cured poorly. Since profits are lower quality has suffered, and I fear on a long enough time line Those amazing strains war have eventually been crossed over again and again until it’s just one homogenous strain with only subtle differences but ever shoppe is going to have their own name for it. Which about sums up pot in Colorado, it’s more about the hype and image then the actual product and unique properties that it holds. Colorado image over substance
