You need to be kind of desensitized to shounen battle series tropes to actually enjoy something like DBZ for particularly long because it will just reuse the exact some ones over and over.

I've always known Takeshi Kitano as a comedy actor, and would find it weird when you see him in a serious role. When Takeshi's Castle (UK version) came out it was ages before I realised that he was actually in it. As the UK version tends to cut the 'non activity parts out' with Craig Charles commentating over it (no dubs or subtitles), while the American translation version ('MOST EXTREME ELIMINATION CHALLENGE') would keep those parts in and then dub everything in apparently whatever they felt like. I remember thinking how strange it was for a well known actor to come in and do this TV game show. Fun fact: Clive James was a contestant on one episode of that show.
