Well...it happened, again. Twice in a month our road has been completely washed out. This has halted progress on the American Hotel and everything else. It's been a very trying time, but if I've learned anything in the past 2 years or so, it's that the only way forward is through. So we got back after it and went about fixing the road, once again.
Along the way, I took two side trips that really inspired me and helped keep everything in perspective. I visited the graves of the 1872 Earthquake victims as well as the Burro Schmidt Tunnel. Both really helped me this week as all this was happening. The stories for both are really interesting and I hope you took as much away from them as I did.

You need a civil engineer to do an water runoff & erosion control/mitigation plan. Imagine if this happened when you had a hotel full of guests and you are stuck waiting for the road to be cleared? Fixing the road permanently is going to be more important than finishing the hotel.

I spent 38 years of my life living a life that wasn't really mine. I'm finally breaking free from that mountain in my life, and I'm emerging into a world soon to explore whatever that's outside. I felt this video so much, and I feel I was destined to find this channel. Thank you for sharing these videos with the world, and for doing what you're doing. Another very inspirational episode ! The road is just another hurdle that you will jump and clear . I have been reading the comments and I think a civil engineers insight specializing in drainage is a good way to go, to carve out a permant plan. I could imagine that it will not be an easy fix but it seems that anything that you put your mind and resources to has been resolved one way or another. Amazing work and by far one of the most interesting project channels on u tube !

Brent, your perseverance is admirable. No matter what adversity is thrown your way, you overcome it. This gorgeous historic town you have has such an amazing combination of history and nature. I have been following your channel for over a year now and hope to make it out there soon. Your hard work ethic and determination is definitely relatable. I have just been through all the motions of a divorce and it almost completely destroyed me. I lost my wife, beautiful country home and my family unit, but I pressed on. After months of gruelling work, I built myself a downsized acreage from the ground up, have had amazing weekend visits with my daughter and have a wonderful girlfriend now. The biggest takeaway from the story of recent Cerro Gordo history I can think of is if you have a massive project or a problem that is seemingly insurmountable, if there's a will, there's a way. Watching the overcoming of so many problems at Cerro Gordo has helped me get through the darkest days I have ever faced. Thanks for the inspiration, the history lessons and gorgeous cinematography of the scenery and events, Mr. Underwood.

Thanks for covering the story of William Schmidt or "Burro Bill". It's like a personal tragedy that turned into dedication & triumph. He was told that his 20 years of incredibly hard labor was wasted, but he didn't think so. Multiple generations later, people still read that memorial & walk through his tunnel. It shows what a dedicated person is truly capable of. The man moved tons & tons of mountain. God speed, William Schmidt.

This is why ditches exist. You desperately need a water management ditch on the side of the road, with a sloped and graded road surface, so water travels sideways and into the ditch. and not down the entire length of the road. The water needs to be taken down the mountain in the ditch. Not having a ditch is just going to cause a repeat of this over and over again.

Good on you Brent and thank you. Truly appreciate your transparency and perspective. I am certain you have helped others facing their own darkness, one shovel-load at a time. As a chaplain, I have used mountain analogies as a point of perspective. Sometimes you ask the Lord to help you over or around the mountain and His answer is to hand you a shovel in order to dig into it as part of the journey He has purposed you for. The darkness can seem long, unbearable, and without puepose as you continue to dig. With each shovel of dirt, the next could be your breakthrough of light, which keeps you moving forward until your purpose is finished. For this diligent soul, 38 years of his work stands the test of time... and we remember him today because of it.

I believe that EVERYTHING we do in life that feels like we're climbing an endless mountain, is helped by inspiration from all those who have come before us, who have also accomplished climbing their mountain. None of us accomplish great things in life without the help of others. 💚

Such a great example and lessons. I can't imagine how deep you had to dig to persevere, but I'm really inspired by your grit and passion for what you're doing. I'll definitely be revisiting this video.

Glad you aren't throwing in the towel. You have an entire community cheering for you to succeed! Additionally, The Mighty Mole's tunnel is so cool! Much love from Colorado!

Brent, you're a huge inspiration; I admire the work and effort you've put to this project but even more the resiliency with which you move forwards. Hope the road gets fixed :)

I grew up in Ridgecrest and recently just moved back to be with family. It's strange to hear your little middle-of-nowhere town's piece of history being told in a YouTube video, but I really appreciate all you do. California's full of this unique history that isn't told much, and it's really cool to know that someone's preserving the ghost town my dad used to take me to as a kid :)

Wow thats really cool that you have a direct connection to the town . I bet it was amazing to explore the area when you were younger . I have allot of great memories with my grandfather doing the same thing in Utah , in a old coal mining town called Hiawatha. Most of the houses and structures had been torn down by the time I was there. But it was fun to be with somebody that remembered how it used to look and could tell stories about how the residences lived day to day . There must have been 50 or so houses in the town when the coal mine was in operation and everybody had the same skeleton key to the front doors since it was common for families to move from house to house when they wanted a change of scenery. Imagine trusting your neighbors that much at this day and age . The world would be a better place .

My husband and I walked through that tunnel without a flashlight! It is mind boggling to realize what Burro Schmidt accomplished! Truly amazing.

I feel your pain on the road brother. My wife and I live on a 126 acre piece of land and have been there for 6 years. In those 6 years we have had our road washed away at least 8 times. Three of those were "100 year floods". The downside to that is we get no help from the county because we only have two houses on the property so it is considered a private road. Hang in there. There is a certain amount of mental fortitude required to live in certain places and yours is one of those places as is mine. Congrats on the help from Kubota>>> that is awesome that they helped you out.

One in 100 year flood, does not mean your weather service expects a flood of that severity, to occur, once every 100 years. It means, the odds of such a flood happening, are 1 in 100 against, in your area, on any day, during any particular year.

I'm glad projects have gotten back on track after such devastating floods. I wish you the best of luck with the American Hotel and am excited to see the new video premier this afternoon!
