While the animation is great, unfortunately, after briefly mentioning the predecessor to Indian chess, it just shoots through a somewhat random series of events in chess. I personally was searching for the history of chess to see more about how the game itself developed.

It is indeed, there is a whole range in this style devised by Remus and Rikki, especially for Ted Ed, it seems. I am somewhat interested in chess, but I came for the animation style. But I feel, it is the use of color and subtle pattern, more than the use of shape that attracts me. And the actual animation is quite simple mostly. This of course is a sign of mastery, not meant as a bad thing :)

Interesting fact, Chaturanga in Indonesia becomes Catur which also mean 4. I believe it was adopted from sanskrit word. Check is called sekak, which usually fit in to Javanese language.

Sekak comes from the Dutch word schaak..

Indonesians ( and Malays ) call their language Bahasa which comes from Sanskrit Bhasha.

catur does indeed come from the Sanskrit word for 4. similarly, the Latin word for 4 is quattuor. they are cognants since they are both ancient Indo-European languages.

I have a shatranj board with camels, elephants and horses. In india, when people speak hindi while playing the modern chess, the bishop is literally called 'camel', the rook is the elephant and the knight is called "horse" and the pawn is called "प्यादा" meaning "a soldier/person who walks on foot"

The one who invented the chess must've been very very intelligent, because chess really flects how life is. You know how to play chess then you should know how to play life. For example a soldier can beat a horse, a horse is so powerful but a soldier HAS to beat the horse with the horse weakness which is to be close to it. Now let's reflect it to boxing. For Mike tyson to win his matches, he had to get inside close to the opponent to use his strength. Always know what your strength and weakness is.

When europeans introduced to this game they change the name of pieces . In india the piece names were like we fight in a battleground . Foreign : Indian Knight- Horse ( in hindi ghoda) Bishop- camel (in hindi ohut) Rook- elephant (in hindi haathi) King -Raja ( in hindi also raja ) means we said king to raja in real life too. Queen - Rani( in hindi rani also ) means in real life we said queen to rani . Pawn-sipahi / pihala ( means a soldier who defence only) .

There is mistake on some of the boards in the animation where the pieces are setup with a dark square on the bottom right (eg at 4:04). This is wrong and means the board is set up sideways.

One day I got bored and decided to teach myself chess by doing random stuff and seeing what worked. People always see chess as a quiet game of strategy, that's not really true. Once I was playing chess with one of those chess bots, it took my queen, I shot up and yelled "you bi*ch". Chess will not make you classy, just make you realize just how annoyed you can be.

When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️

For anyone wondering the moves of the weak advisor piece, It moved like a bishop, but could only move 1 square in each direction, but it was later buffed to 2, and then it got heavily buffed into the Queen. Little bit of chess history for you

I just always try to move a bunch of pieces to the center of the board, castle early, and then try not to get into uneven trades Not sure if it’s the best strategy but I developed it in middle school and never stopped using it

The video doesn't mention how the inventor of the chess was awarded. As the legend goes, the inventor asked for the ruler (local Maharaja) to grant him grains of rice on each chess board square. The number of rice grains would double after each square. Maharaja thought it was a simple request, but at the end, he couldn't grant this request.

To me the biggest flaw in chess is the inability of the pawn to move in any direction except forward. They are the foot soldiers of the board and could be used more strategically if allowed to move as foot soldiers actually do.

From where I live we call the pieces:- King=Pashah(King) Queen=Wazeer(Minister) Bishop=Feel(Elephant) Knight=Asp(Horse) Rook=Jundi(Soldier)

The modern version of chess is Persian/Iranian. Persians/Iranians completely changed it into this today's version. The older one that indians invented was very different.

Just to clarify, the Chinese term used for the pseudo-chess is “象棋“ and not “圍棋”, the one in the video. The one I mentioned means “elephant game” and the one in the video “surrounding game”. They are two completely different things.

I wish the video expanded more on how software has determined the best way to play. What i found interesting is that the software is always evolving. Ill quote the video, "But just like the game they've mastered, these machines are products of human ingenuity.". To my knowledge one of the most popular chess algorithms, Stockfish, was programmed in a way which ranks pieces. It looks at all possibilities ahead to a certain depth to the point that the amount of possibilities becomes an ever increasing exponential. That id agree is programmed to the best of human understanding, ie their own ingenuity. There's a new algorithm called Alpha zero, which is an ai based algorithm. What i find so interesting in how the algorithm differs from stockfish. There is no ranking system, it looks at what is best to win the game and that it. sometimes sacrificing valuable pieces in order to gain a stronger position. Its changing how we think about chess, and that hasn't changed sense 1977.

That's all that matters...Succeeding the game. Lesser the axiom, more the possibilities. I don't think that it will change. Ideally speaking, the only thing that players should know is how each pieces move, special moves like castling, pond promotion etc, what starts first and then, target...Winning and that is all that was given to the AI. You probably know better than me. Just wanted to reply.

Kasparov's 1997 defeat was more down to overconfidence than lack of ability. It wasn't until the late 2000's that Chess programs gradually began to fully surpass human ability, with the rise of programs like Shredder, AlphaZero and Stockfish.

The knight is my fav piece. He isn’t dramatic like the other pieces. He can jump over everyone else.

Nice video in general but some other interesting details could have been added. And the fact that they didn’t have the white square on the right on some of the boards for modern chess was a no no.

In India, We still call it the gojo (war elephant) instead of Bishop. Also, it is rook (war ship) instead of a castle.

the king is the one commanding the others, while the others are moving, he's commanding because his survival is the only key to the win.
