It's worth remembering that some of the strongest midlaners of the time were: Gragas, Orianna, and LeBlanc. All magic damage, vulnerable to silence. Kass was SS tier and countered the S tier. Not even a level 6 LeBlanc (who also had a silence back then!) could out-trade this monster. He'd sit out of range, riftwalk into range, Q, E and walk away. Nothing you could do. Some of my worst nightmares are S3 midlane league.

@Ser Edimond IV the old gangplank, or the new one? Cause the old Gangplank is arguably one of the worst champions in League, since only his Q is a viable skill. His W heal is negligible, while his E is only slightly useful on the laning phase. His R is so bad since you only take damage when the cannonballs hit you directly, unlike now where you get damaged as long as you're inside the AOE.

I started playing League back in June or July 2012. Kassadin was like Pandora's Box. As soon as someone got their hands on him, the apocalypse began. I quit League somewhere around April 2013 without ever getting to play Kassadin in a ranked game. I always just banned him. Back in August 2019 I decided to go back to LoL and the first thing I asked my brother who never stopped playing the game was 'Is banning Kassadin still a thing?' The video itself is a piece of art to those who love the game and still remember the days when you were almost able to count the pixels in Summoner's Rift. Thank you.

@thuy tran pick yasuo. He's a great kassadin counterpick if you know how to use him. It forces him to go seekers first instead of a pure AP item. Almost any AD mid would be a bad matchup for him. Talon also wrecks him in lane. Idk man, I'm a GP main and I love facing Kassadin in mid because it's a free lane.

Funny, because the old champion select is why I got to Plat three years in a row as a mid lane main and why now I can't get out of Gold 4 despite not being any worse of a mid laner than I was back then. Why? Because now I *have* to play every third game in a different role and that's after accounting for the two "free" dodges a day I get. Before Role Select was added, I only ever played support in 2% of matches _(a few years back I counted all ranked matches before Role Select was added, so it's a fact, not a random number)_ and never played ADC, top or jungle unless I felt like it, because I could simply talk down people into letting me mid, even as last pick. Nowadays people don't communicate for shit in the champion select, so there are days where I don't play a single match, because the third dodge is a 12 hour ban.

@I Forgot back then there was no draft mode, even for ranked. The “autofill” was your pc loading the client slower than other peoples so you didnt get to call your role in time. This led to many AFK’s, trolls, people who would just run it down mid and go 0/30. saw this happen once, but his team won bc my team was too stupid to realize that they can’t outrun an udyr and they chased him literally across the whole map while his team took our base. I told them they’re morons for chasing for over a minute FOR AN UDYR WORTH LESS THAN A MINION

Man I feel you. I used to play a lot of support, and I actually kinda liked it. All you needed to do was just buy a fuckton of wards to put everywhere, maybe an aura item or two. Vision was massive, and in lower elos nobody put a lot of attention to that, so just remembering wards exist gave you massive advantage.

In Season 4, before Kassadin got reworked, I could play him 4 times in my 10 placement matches. I still tell this story to my friends. 95% ban rate and I got him in 40% of my placement matches. I will never forget that.

I started League back in mid season 2 and picked up Kassadin in early season 3 back before it was picked in LCS and seemed OP It was probably the best and most successful time I ever had in league, farming safe till lvl 6 and almost oneshotting everything after. Kassadin allowed me to climb from bronze end of season to plat 1 in like 4 months After Kassadin was picked in LCS and became a must ban in those games, it was banned in like 90% of ranked games and first picked in the other ones so I was forced to play a different champ... good times

This is probably my favorite Exil video ever. Details galore about the most ridiculously overpowered champion since beta Jax or release xin zao or Leblanc, except this was well into the games life and it lasted for a while. Learning about it and watching it again is always a treat

The mana stealing was also on an item at one point. Also for op, I’ve been playing since a little after beta and I’d say release Xin was pretty terrible. LeBlanc has some awful times too.

@Omny She wasn't though. Her current winrate of ~48% is basically the same you'd get after averaging her stats since 2015. Yes, she had periods of doing better than that, but she's hardly a consistently reliable pick you make her to be.

You mention in a lot of your videos how certain patches were significant missteps or made huge fixes in the meta but just googling those patch numbers rarely turns up discussion about the impact on the game, instead yielding just patchnotes. It would be cool if you could do videos like these ones you do for characters, but just focused on a single important patch and how it shifted the game at the time vs how it's viewed now. ​@Jake the only reason that 200% is possible is because the banning phase during the kassawin is different where both team cannot pick the same hero to be banned unlike today where both team can ban the same champion. And that 200%+ statistics is only for tournaments. Global solo queue ban rate of aphelios only reached around 75% where kassawin is 95%.

Nowadays he has to get to level 16 to steamroll the enemy, at the time all he needed was level 6.

I started maining Kassawin when he got reworked, I didn't really played him before (too many bans lol) but I think trading the range for no-cooldown ulti was a great idea because it makes him more balanced, weaker in the early game where you can still chase him, and stonger during the late game when you one shot everyone with just pressing R. Still my favourite champion today and almost 40% of my games are played with him. Thanks for the video !

In pro scene, during s9 meta included a huge pool of picks that means red side was strong af because of champion select, although one ban less.

I remember that I didn't know the game that well back then. I realized how OP he was and bought him the week before the big nerfs/rework... I never really experienced his power.

I remember playing ranked once in season 3, never really playing ranked. Also never really played mid, more of a jungle/support. I got first pick, and there was no Kass ban. I got to play him during his peak. And I lost to a Ryze. Probably the most memorable game of League I'll ever play tho.

I started playing in Season 2. I remember NEVER played Kassadin. He was open, I was 1st pick; I picked Kassadin. I dominated with Kassadin. It was insane. Even in my bumbling hands, the champ was broken. The enemy team was raging in chat, and for good reason. His kit was easy to play, and all you had to do was play somewhat smart.

I was evil. I bought kassadin to ensure the enemy wastes a ban (i was waiting for nerf to play him bc ban rate) and it was highly effective. Since it was such an effective ban-bait, i damn near never got banned out of who i wanted. Decided to pick him up again cuz hes too damn fun.

Damn, I still remember those days. And the 1 time someone let Kassadin in and I defeated him in lane as Talon. I felt like a freaking god. And then when Kassadin was reworked, Leblanc rose to dominance in his stead. The Legend of Kassawin, the Forbidden One. Beautiful video!

But then he got nerfed the patch after, it was short lived but that Kassadin was also fun when everyone else still thought he was bad

having lived through every stage of this game i really get nostalgic watching such videos. it was a different game back then, not better in every aspect only some but it was sure different.

I was a midalee main from her release all the way through until her rework (yes I still played her after she was gutted) and out of that entire time I think I only had a kassadin in my ranked game 3 times and 2 of those were me and the other one was the guy who was first pick. And almost everytime kassadin wasn’t banned and got picked it was almost always an instant dodge and if no one dodged instantly one of us on the team would talk out whose gonna get less dodge time and lp loss from leaving. It was honestly stupid. Lmfao still to this day I can’t believe they gave assassins silences with as much mobility and burst as kassadin//Leblanc.

G6 Liara as a 4-year Braum/Leona/Thresh veteran, i relate to this on a spiritual level lmao 2 months after the “pick-a-role” was introduced, support/autofill became a habit because yeah, even those who were assigned support would yank for other lanes and ruin the experience for the entire team, 11 out of 10 times.

@Andre Milani Martin great analogy, but no. Yasuo is just a super common pick and once someone picks it, he is automatically top lane, no question. Not saying everyone wants top lane, just saying that you'll commonly find the same champs in top and mid (Yasuo and Zed) over and over again, while nobody wants to play support.

Honestly, yeah. Here in the Philippines, Blind Pick is the only way you can play normals. If you pick Yasuo, you're immediately top lane. If someone else intends to play top, they fight for it, and it ends up being 2 top laners, leaving the ADC alone (I feel this). If you pick Zed or any assassin, you're mid. No question. That's why I'm starting to become a support main. Pyke, Yuumi, Alistar and Thresh got me carrying games (with my team praising my ADC as always).

Let me tell you, I was usually winning in lane! Now, late game and teamfights might have been a different story but yeah, I believe I have found the counterpick even to that old Kassadin

haha, I remember the good old days of "haha Kassadin was picked, want me to camp mid?" I was a Jarvan Jungle main since S2. When Kass made it into a game on the enemy side, I just told the team "our fault we didn't ban him. Going to camp mid all game, sorry but you guys have to manage" and I would hard leash red, *immediately* head into the bush and suicide-dive bomb the lad. Even if I didn't get the kill, so long as I didn't die and he was forced to back, I had considered it a victory. I would then get blue, and wraiths (ahh good old wraith camp) and immediately run back into the same bush, gank, head to wolves, gank from other bush, ward dragon, re, get red, gank again. If our team got Kass, my job was to protect our Kass so I camped the lane yet again, either acting as counter jungler, or helping kass securing the kill, not even hesitating to offer up the kill to our oh-so-over-powered-god. In ranked S3, he was picked once on my team, and once on the enemy out of the ~300 games I played. We won completely when he was on our team, when he was on the enemy team, we didn't fair badly and I *did* shutdown Kass, but then he just abandoned mid, ganked bot, ez 2 kills, and the rest of the game was my entire team having an average kda of 5/3/7 while the entire enemy team was something like 1/4/2 and a Kassadin with 16/8/0. He literally put the team on his back and barely scraped out a victory.

As a mid main during seasons 3 and 4, I remember Fizz being as, if not more powerful than Kass. I played Kass as often as I could as it was my fav pick, but man Fizz was a pain in the arse to deal with.

I know a funny story about S3 Kassawin. The story is the experience of a friend of mine. One ranked game, the dream happened - Kassadin was let through the ban phase. My friend, who would then be somewhere around Diamond (so considered pretty good at the game and eventually reached Challenger later on) had been the chosen one and picked him. He hadn't played the champion in so long (due to the obvious reason) and wasn't generally a Kassadin player even before the 95% ban rate so saying he was rusty on the champion is an understatement. But he was playing Kassawin, right? It's like Riot sending you a button with the message "click here to collect your free LP"! Anyway. The game starts. Mid vs Kassadin? Taric. Well, if it hadn't been freelo before, now it sure was! My friend didn't go into details on how exactly the match up went because he doesn't remember, but what he does remember is Taric solo killing him 7 times. That's right. 0/7 Kassadin mid in Season 3. Worse than Brazil 1 - 7 Germany in the 2014 FIFA World Cup (not that Brazil was the favourite to win anyway). And again, he wasn't some bronze player that didn't know the first rule of League (which is to not chase Signed, if any of you guys have forgotten) but far from that. His teammates had proceeded to flame the living shit out of him. Just imagine the combination of losing on S3 Kassadin + doing so solo vs Taric mid + EUW server. I'm pretty sure if they knew his identity he'd be put on a WANTED list. He had been so embarrassed he had to leave the game after the 7th death. And that's the story of one of the few losses of S3 Kassawin.

Sounds like your friend didn't know what scaling was... doesn't really matter how many times u die if you get to late game in Kass. And it ain't like taric is gonna solo carry any team.

I have fond memories of kassawin. Played duo with a friend and picked kassadin into talon that was considered counter those days. Went like 0-6 on lande, and told my friend, just play, and get me few kills, and its free win. Got triple kill in one teamfight, and proceeded to solocarry the whole match.

Kass will always have a special place in my heart. Season 3 Last game before ranked is closed for the year Failed to hit diamond the previous years 2/2 in my diamond promos Kass was open The rest was history 😎

its still interesting to think that in 4.4 even tough kassadin got hard shit on, his ult range remained the same until 5.4/5.5 where it was reduced to 450/500 - also when you look at it: until 5.16 he had a 0% ap scaling (but 2% max mana) on his ult and since then only got slight adjustments on his spells and base stats. Which took him since s7 in this quite nice spot as a champion in the game

This was about the time I first saw the game, a friend was playing it and I used to watch him play it all the time. there was this one game where he actually got to lock in him and I am not kidding my friend actually jumped out of his chair in excitement. Kassadin had my Favourite Ult, then Shen Ult (Again After Rework), Skarner Ult, then Sett Ult. But I’ll never forget my first time starting as him... where I built Mana/Regen and would hide ambush with ult and flash. I got better with him over time... I miss the silence the most. My first proper Mid Laner.

I think the world record for heighest ban rate goes to Zac after the tank rework. I think he had 100% ban rate at masters+ until he was finally nerfed 1 or 2 patches later.

Kassadin over the years was actually quite a hard champion to main as a casual player with how high the banrate was and how scared people were of investing time in Kassadin when there was a big chances he would either be banned or too weak for the meta. Times have changes ofcourse but you do need to play Kassadin quite a bit to make him work.

I remember a strategy back than. Wenn we played against him we used to pick a rammus and use teleport from base to taunt kassadin as fest as posseble useing the teleport.

Kassadin was my first main starting in s2. As OP and perma-banned as he was, he was not a guaranteed win. I was very good with kassadin and regularly got penta-kills, but if the first 10-15 minutes of the game went especially poorly you basically had no chance of getting to the god-like state. I actually played against WildTurtle in a normals match one day, he was Syndra and I was Kassadin. I got first blood on him because he tower dove me, but he also got the kill (ignite). He then went the rest of lane phase beating me 7/1. Thankfully my friend, a diamond 1 ADC at the time, carried the game for us.

mundo and soraka both hit a higher banrate at times when the old banning system was in play and there were more threats to the average champ in terms of balance. its rare but probably like 7-10 champs were more impactful than this kassadin just fixed quickly lol

When i was just starting league on season 4 i asked my gold friend whats the first champion i should buy to reach level 30. He said kassadin because he is OP. Needless to say that was an easy grind to lvl 30.

Your story telling is really good, I thought I would've closed the video before hittin the 10-15 mins but it actually got me through till the end.

I remember playing a ranked game back then where our first pick decided not to ban Kassadin because he said he was overrated and could easily be countered. The enemy team picked up Kassadin first, we lost. Sometimes I wonder what that idiot is doing now with his bad life choices.

I remember back in the day I had a friend that would play Kass all the time, he built Tear of the Goddess and ran teleport. He would sit in base stacking up riftwalks until he would nearly consume his whole mana pool in one cast, then he'd teleport in and one shot supports and carries. It was the funniest shit.

I remember when I started playing League mid season 3. One of the first thing I learned in my ranked match is "ALWAYS ban Kassadin"

I'd like to put forward early days Twisted Fate and Hiemerdinger as being still potentially more out of line in each of their primes. Hiem had turrets that scaled their own stats over time, they out ranged most ADC's, the granade could out range and damage turrets and the rockets had a homing function and couldn't target minions. People dont talk about TF's "hidden" cards but that was one of the most advantageous bugs ever even competing against people having brand ults as auto attacks and whatnot.

That 95% ban rate is also kind of skewed towards solo and duo queues as well. I played in a team back then and there were MANY matches where Kass wasn't banned, pretty much due to the thought that "if we can get Kass first we win," from both my team and the opponents. There was this mentality that you could talk it out with the team and try to gamble it, especially if someone actually DID play Kassadin. In solo and duo queues first pick was way more likely to just safety ban Kass, especially once you got to a rank where people realized "I don't know how to play Kass and it's not worth risking the other team having him" instead of just "pick kass free win." I remember being a pretty fresh rank 30, new on the team, getting first pick and everyone telling me "Don't ban Kass, okay now pick Kass" and then basically getting an on-the-fly tutorial. Even being a first-time-Kass in a ranked match and feeding like crazy for the first 12 minutes once mid-late game hit it was like my character might as well have just been a delete button. I was something like 2/7 once mid game hit and finished 14/8 he was completely bonkers. So yeah that 5/100 games where Kass isn't banned is probably much, much lower if you're talking solo/duo.

I remember Darius came very close to 100% bans after his rework. Did he ever reach 95%?

As someone who has played the whole 10 years..... *the 'Old Kassadin'* still gives me nightmares to this day and is one of the big reasons why I never cared or wanted to start playing midlane.... thank god this doesn't exist anymore....

Hey Exil, can you do a video on AP yi? I heard a lot of people saying it was beyond broken but never really fully understood why since i wasn't playing league in early seasons.

Used to do pretty well back then with Ahri against Kassadin. Season 3 is still the best state the game was ever in. We miss you deathfire grasp and no ward limitations!

When doing the calculation for how rare it was to get kassadin you forgot to divide by 2 at the end cause the enemy could be first pick even when you are ontop on your team

me and my friends in silver banned kassa even after the rework, just because we were used to it! at this point we had no idea if he was strong cause we never saw him!

I miss these days, too bad Kass got nerfed into his grave. I remember my season average with him was a 15/4 and I LOVED wrecking Talons

the thing is... Kassadin was always that busted and, much like Lee Sin, it took a very long time for people to realize it. if we went back to play beta or season 1 again, I firmly believe that Kassadin would be perhaps even more dominant

A reminder that, with 40% cdr, kassadin’s riftwalk had a 2.4 second cool down. This is already really good, but it becomes even more insane when you remember that his Q had a 2.6 second silence. This means that 40% cdr Kassadin could legitimately ult on top of you, silence you, use his w auto reset and force pulse, and then riftwalk away from you all before you could cast a single spell. I only got to do this a couple times before kassadin was heavily changed, but to this day I have never felt that level of power in league, even if better champions have existed throughout history.

I remember one game in S3 where our mid picked him and enemy team either couldn't agree who needs to dodge or dodged too late. They literally gave up and didn't even bother playing, we had some fun in mid lane and won 20 mins later while their first pick was accused of inting because he didn't ban him and didn't dodge. No way anything similar happens again and trust me, nothing is this OP today.

Also kassadin was 1 of 3 champions banned from the original urf due to how broken they were in the mode.

season 3, ocelote and xpeke were my favourite league players and loved both of them. That backdoor game was sadly the end of league for me. since then i stopped watching & playing so much lol as I finished school and started working, after few years i had no clue whats happening, so much new teams, no familiar faces. Multiple tournaments when there was only LCS i knew about before. even now I feel so zoned out I on 1 hand want to play some, but on another hand it will be better if I dont huh

Champ select back then worked differently. The person in the team with the highest elo was firstpick. it was literally sorted by MMR. the game told you by them being above you, they are propably better than you. that changed sometime shortly before the new champ select to be entirely random iirc.

Lmao, my friend abused an armor Kassadin build (he called it Kassawin). He went from plat 4 to diamond 1...quite amazing actually

back when they finally made it so that kass wasn't a perma ban, it took me like a year to break the habit of banning kassadin as a panic ban or when i wasn't thinking about it
