Important to remember that Jordan had a Long Contract that only paid 2.5 Million for his first 8 years. So, it is more than normal that he should get overpaid to compensate for the many years he dominated while many players that were much less valuable were getting paid more than him, which was a total aberration.
Vor yearSander Koyen
@JKTProductionzIncNCo They screwed themselves in that regard. Mahomes is gonna have the same problem. Just don't sign long contracts, its only beneficial for the team.

The charts were misleading though, as you rarely started the y-axis at 0, making the differences seem much larger relative to the others than they actually were. For example in the Team wins since 2015, the Warriors look more than double as high as the rest, while they're closer to 33% higher than the second highest.

The most shocking statistic on a chart here, is the fact that Vince Carter is still active.
Vor 2 yearsTom S
@Raymond Tan Yeah! Gigi has played for 31 years in Serie A. One more crazy dude was Jaromir Jagr who played in NHL for 28 years he is still active in top league in Czech republic, he started in NHL at 1990. Those two guys are incredible. Shows you are not even close to done at elite sports in 35. And have 10 more years after 30. Zlatan Ibrahimovich is 40 years old and still the best player in AC Milan. Then the oldest of the old. Chris Chelios he stopped playing NHL at age of 48 in Atlanta Thrashers. He was 45 when he played 69 games for Detroit Red Wings. I do not remember , but i think Igor Larionov was 41 when he stopped playing in NHL. It is a myth you are not good enough for top leagues after 35. All of the above are good examples. The super athleetes just under 40 is MANY, but here is two relevant to this video. Michael Jordan 38 years old. Lebron James 37 years old and still active.

Vor yearBrent Sample
Great charts and fun to go through. One I would suggest for a future video would be wins (playoff and regular season) by teams over their best 5 year stretch. Bulls in the 90’s, recent Warriors, Russell’s Celtics, etc. Another non-NBA chart that might be cool is career points in hockey. At one point Gretzky had so many assists that he would have been the all time points leader without counting a single one of his record goals, not sure if true still but damn. Also receiving yard and receptions in football, think Rice blows everyone away still.
Vor yearBrice Fleckenstein
9:58 Chart is not fair to the Russell-era Celtics - for the same reason you talked about in an earlier part of the video. The playoffs didn't have as many rounds - so they didn't NEED to win quite as many games for a season to win the championship. It's also NOTEABLE that the Warriors LOST the championship in what was their otherwise "best season" - an amazing trick for a team that was "so dominant" and invalidates this entire point.

Bad timing for Pip. Great great player. @Ratel.H Badger It was completely Pippen's fault. Heck even the owner or the GM told him at the time of the contract that this would be bad for him as the NBA is having better prospects in the future, do not lock yourself in but the guy took a safety contract for a long time and was hugely underpaid. But it was completely Pippen's decision. He made a stupid move.

Back in the day the 1st round was best 3 of 5. The nest round was the conference Finals best of 7. So Bill Russel played far fewer playoff games for that reason.

The problem I have with having these charts as visual representations is that most have shortened Y-axes. They graphically suggest players performance numbers twice as high as the next one, but when you look at the numbers they "only" performed 20-30% better. Not taking away anything from the players as they are clearly outstanding performers compared to the rest of them, but the graphics are misleading, even when accompanied by clear and concise explanations.
Vor 2 yearsHello

Vor 22 TageJesse Jordache
@TheGoodChap Sure, I mean, well, both. The reason there are like a dozen of who've been going "waaaiiiit a minute, where's the zero?" is because that's a trick that politicians and ad agencies use all the time. Once it's been pointed out to you a few times, you can't unsee it, so some governor running against another governor puts out an ad talking about how "taxes have skyrocketed!" and you look at the graph and it's put the 'zero' an infinitesimally tiny amount below the previous rate so it makes an increase of half a percent look like a 10-fold increase. It's one of the ways people lie with statistics. Can it be used benignly? Is it benign here? Sure. Of course. But... just don't.
Vor MonatTheGoodChap
It's a graph though so you can visually see in the margins that that's what's happening, in that case it's done to make it more clear where the differences are. I don't think it's meant to be deceiving

The Bill Russel graph was cool (they’re all cool, good stuff 👍) but it’s comparing apples to oranges. If a perfect playoff run in his day was only 7 games..as opposed to 16..you have to adjust to account for that. No it wouldn’t be perfect, but it would be better (and truer) to adjust it according to the new and over twice as long playoff schedule.
Vor yearBrice Fleckenstein
I'd prefer to adjust it to straight "rings vs years played" - where Bill is still easily the leader and his ONLY close competition were all teammates. 11 rings, 12 Finals, in 13 years - nobody since has been even CLOSE.
Vor 7 MonateLeland Bond-Upson
The gap between Steph and everybody else for games with 10 or more 3s is as extreme as any of these 8 charts. He has 22 (and counting), and the next most is Clay, with 5.
Vor yearBrice Fleckenstein
6:47 Add Sam Jones, Tom Heinsolm, KC Jones to the chart and Bill looks less impressive - but note that they weren't leaders for their team, they were Bill Teammates. John Havlicek is a special case, as 2 of his rings he WAS the team leader (and possibly 3 or 4). But factor in the shorter playoffs in Russell (and Wilt's) era, and the numbers look less impressive (which you did point out). On the other hand, 11 rings in 13 years *IS* the highest percentage ever for ANY player - and a more fair comparison.

As a Celtics fan i gotta go with the BILL RUSSELL chart, that is an ABSOLUTELY INSANE feat that will NEVER EVER be done again, NOT EVEN BY LEBRON!!!!!
Vor yearJay Murthy
Jimmy I thought for sure you'd mention this since it directly applies to what you said about Bill Russell. In addition to having only 10 teams in the NBA when Russell played there were fewer playoff rounds and the top teams (like the Celtics) often got first round byes. Whereas Jordan and Magic had to win 15 playoff games to win a title (and often play upwards of 20 games or more), Russell played between 10 and 14 games to win each of his first eight championships. That is probably the most direct attribution to why Bill Russel is such an outlier here...
Vor yearBrice Fleckenstein
11 championships in 13 years is more of an outlier, if you exclude Bill teammates. Bill has the highest winning percentage for a CAREER by a wide margin, except for a few teammates like Sam Jones. People brag about MJ being 6 of 6 in the Finals - but how many Finals did he MISS? Bill missed *ONE* in his entire career as the unquestioned leader of his Celtics.
Vor 7 MonateRev. Edward Martinez
Great stuff. I was privileged to watch Dwight Howard accomplish those doubles. I didn't realize till now how significant that record was.
Vor yearForgitive
@Brice Fleckenstein that's double doubles, not 20-20 games. Dwight leads that statistic actually, but for double doubles he does not. He is the nba all-time leader in 20-20 games, with apparently 51 according to the research I did, and jimmy got 52 so either one of the stats is still the all time record.

20/20 games? Dwight Howard is great but go back in time a bit. Chamberlain averaged 30.1 points and 22.9 rebounds over 1045 games. His average night was a 20/20 before it was a stat they kept. 500+ perhaps? Someone went back and figured he had 263 20/20 games between 1959 and 1962. Legend.

I loved that part about Dwight Howard. That dude just never recovered from that back injury, or was never able to adjust his game while still delivering 13 and 13 a game. But in his prime, he was one of the top 5 players in the league. Hands down. We all lament the injuries to future hall-of-famers like Penny, Grant Hill, or Yao. Vor 2 yearsBrice Fleckenstein
@Till Görlach By that logic, how can you compare Wilt to Russell, since Wilt caused so may rule changes while both of them were playing (though Bill appears to have had some input into causing the Offensive Goaltending rule). The whole question of "GOAT" is of course a debate - contrary to what Jordan fanboys and fangirls think, he is NOT the GOAT in the minds of everyone - nor is Bill, or Wilt, etc, and there are about 10 people that have strong support for being the GOAT. Not as clear cut as Gretsky in hockey (though even with HIS dominance, there are a few that hold out for players like Howe and Hull).

On your 20 - 20 chart featuring Dwight Howard you say that his feat is more than ridiculous, just think about what Wilt Chamberlain did. he averaged over 30 pts AND 22 rebs for his whole 16 year career. Unfortunately, the NBA has never published a career total of how many games Wilt topped 20 points and 20 rebounds, but it has been estimated at more than 500. In a four-year period between 1959-62, someone once calculated that he reached the 20-20 mark 263 times, including 70 in 1961-62, the season he averaged 50.4 points and 25.7 rebounds. Yes, that was the same season he scored 100 points in a game for the Philadelphia Warriors. PUT THAT ON A CHART.

And to be picky, it was actually 26 - 20, as his LOWEST scoring games were 26, 28, 30, and 31 (all against Russell) that season but he missed on rebounds a few times (as low as 15). Even AFTER pace adjustment, Wilt would still have had more 20-20 games THAT SEASON than Howard has in his career.

The most unbreakable record in the NBA. Bill Russell - rebounds in Finals games. Wilt is #2 - at *almost* HALF (abet in half as many series). Lebron is the only current player on the list - at about ONE THIRD (in 4'th place behind Elgin Baylor, but will probably pass for *3d* this year).

Russell Westbrook is like when I played 2k12 and just had a 99 overall SG and chocked like every finals till I retired at the age of 25 out of frustration.

@NUTTY The only "Chart" You need of Vince Carter is the olympic dunk though. The only dunk so nasty his opponent literally decided to retire afterwards. Poor man never played another minute in the NBA after it.

Great work. The Russel chart is silly to include, not incredible. When Russel played, there 9-10 teams, and you could win a championship by winning two playoff series (8 games).

Those 20 20 games by Dwight Howard are ridiculous and the playoff points by lebron unmatched. This whole video had me thinking "Momma there goes that man"

Bill Russell for sure! But what was the playoff schedule like back then? Seems like I must have been different

This is awesome. Dwights chart blew me away the most.

The playoff game/ championship stat is obviously skewed. They played best of 5 series. If you inflate for era, while still dominant Russell's stat is still "technically" beatable

I like the idea of this video but manipulating the axis to not start at zero is deceptive... Plus most of the x axis are meaningless except the Bill Russell case.

Bulls made 30mill in one season off of Jordan jerseys alone. So that makes perfect sense

Some context that helps the first chart is scotties pay. He got paid 2 million that year. It was well documented that he screwed up his contract. This is no ones problem but his but it’s still also reality that they couldn’t have built that team and mj couldn’t have been paid that much without Scottie screwing that up.

Vor yearRyan Campbell
7:41 he won them “impossibly” because the playoffs were only best of 5 series until sometime in the 2000s

It actually takes 15 games for a perfect playoff run 3 in the best of 5 and 4 in each series after

I believe the Howard hate started around the NBA All-star weekend of 2008. When he wore a Superman cape during the Slam dunk contest. Shaq didn't appreciate this & insecurities started to arise. Believing he was the better player & he was the best center Orlando ever had & the Better Superman.

Another way to think of the Jordan pay. Despite that HUGE amount of pay, the organization for the Chicago bulls raked in record profits that year with ads, tv contracts, and merchandising. So was he worth it? Hell yeah they would say as they roll around in the piles of money they made. And of course well all know how well MJ did. He has been brilliant in business and in marketing himself, so he became a Billionaire in 2010 and is one of the richest people in the US today with ownership of the Charlotte Hornets to boot. Heck in the final game he played with the Wizards the opposing players intentionally fouled him in the ending minutes so he could sink free throw shots for the crowd and then go back to the bench to cheers. That is love and respect from the NBA fans, no matter the team they rooted for. Hence he was worth every penny not only to the Bulls but to the NBA as a whole. Of course what these charts prove is the NBA and the popularity has been built based on the unique skills and amazing ability of a few select people. Individuals with talents rare and unique and above those of even the great players. Think about how the NBA would be without many of the names mentioned here .. it is their ability to shine brighter than the rest that brings in the fans.
