6 German Foods I STILL REALLY DISLIKE?

Nutella... Yes, it's just much too sweet. But there are other (mostly cheaper) Nuss- Nougat Cremes which taste a lot better (IN MY OPINION). Sadly most people will always stick to Nutella

The first thing you mentioned (red cabbage, duck (or other meat) and dumplings) is a typical dish of Thuringia. And I know that in some restaurants the red cabbage has this weird sweet taste. I mean TOO sweet. But there are also other taste notes that you can give to it

To me, black licorice and whole radishes with salt aren't at all german-specific foods. Both very common growing up in midwest. And while I like the taste of both hazel nut and chocolate, I find nutella to be way too sweet. I'd like to try the black bread with cheese, like a nice aged cheddar or gruyere, or with cream cheese and lox.

The red cabbage isn't meant to be eaten alone. Think about it. If you have a meal with sauerkraut, do you eat it alone? No, it is combined with other elements in the dish. The protein, or a starch is eaten along with it. It is meant to create multiple dimensions of flavor in each bite. At least, that was how it was explained to me when I served in the Army in Bamberg in 1986-87.

I think what's even more impressive than the fact that you caught that radish, is that you didn't drop anything off of the plate, or the whole thing itself in the process of catching the radish! That hand is steady as a rock! I feel as though my natural reaction would be to try to use both hands to catch it without thinking and drop the whole plate and it's remaining contents! :-)

Rotkohl is ne Beilage. Kein Gericht für sich. Kein Tier frisst trockenes pures Schwarzbrot. xD Currywurst ist total bla. Meist zu viel Soße für zu wenig Wurst-Stückchen. Was soll sowas?

I'm not getting the aversion to the warm red cabbage thing. In the USA, I grew up eating fried cabbage, green or red, and it was one of my favorite things to eat for dinner (still is). So what's the difference between frying up some cabbage and "warm red cabbage"? How's it prepared? Other than that, I think Dana's just a picky eater and most people would like most or all of the things she doesn't.

Is this chocolate hazelnut spread different from Nutella then? I would think that it would be similar. However, one thing I do know is that German chocolate tends to have less sugar in it than that sold in America and even the UK so I'm wondering whether it has anything to do with that.

Try homemade Rotkohl with homemade mash potatoes, takes it to a different level on your palate. Curry Wurst is often done with low quality bratwurst, regardless of "fein or grobe Bratwurst". I don't like Sauerkraut, but I know as child I really liked it. BUT very curious: I like kimchi. XD I love Rotkohl and Brussels sprouts (fav vegetable of my boyfriend). Eat Schwarzbrot with "Aachener Pflümli" (Pflaumenmus). Or what my granny often did: Weißbrot (dicke scheiben vom Bäcker) + Butter + Gouda + Schwarzbrot oder mit Rübenkraut (IDK if you can get Rübenkraut somewhere else than in NRW/at the Niederrhein). To eat Currywurst go to the Ruhrpott, many "Büdchen" or some small restaurants have their own sauce. :) Or a different sausage. and get it with fries. (maybe directly trying Currywurst + Pommes Schranke... yummi) .

Red cabbage goes also pretty well with Bratwurst or meatloaf, brown sauce and mashed potatoes. But you're right, red cabbage and duck is very common. Especially on Christmas. Also with some kind of potatoes and brown sauce. Yeah, hazelnut cream is very popular here. Many candy snacks are made with it. It's similar with peanut butter candy in the US I guess. Schwarzbrot. Well this is a "You love it" or you "dislike it" thing. But as with red cabbage: you need some things to it. In this case: Put farmer cheese and herbs on it. Or Salami or whatever. Licorice is more popular in the north of Germany then in the south (statistic). Especially the salty one. I personal don't like it either. Radish goes pretty well with a sandwich. Or in small slices in a salad with other mixed vegetables. You can also cut it in slices and put a bit of salt on top and eat it with a sandwich. Yeah, the spicy kick is kind of mustard spice or a much less intense version of Wasabi. In fact: radish, horse radish and wasabi are closely related. Die Currywurst. My dear Americans: THIS is the most German fastfood. And Döner (from Turkish-German takeaway diners). A Currywurst is basically a Bratwurst in slices with a kind of ketchup (not really ketchup, it’s kinda fruity) sauce (a lot!) and lots of curry powder on top. Often goes with French fries. Nearly every diner in Germany has its own recipe for the sauce. Like the spare rips, homemade BBQ sauce or chicken wings in the US diners.

Rotkohl doesn't even exist in Munich. And Blaukraut from a can cannot be good. Have it as part of a meal. Licorice isn't really German. Yes, it's a thing. But the Danish, Dutch and Swedish are far more into it. Glad you somewhat liked the Radieserl aka Radieschen. Pretty much a prerequisite to become a true Munich citizen. Currywurst. Not really Bavarian. We couldn't care less. Doesn't make you less of a Munich girl if you don't like it.

You got to put the right spices into your Blaukraut a/k/a Rotkohl: Gewürznelken, Piment, the right kind of vinegar, a teaspoon of honey to balance it out, ein geriebener Apfel und eine gehackte Zwiebel are what I would suggest. Maybe you've put in something different? That Nougatcreme really is to Germany like peanut butter is to the US as far as popularity is concerned. Have you tried Cashewmus before? It's delicious! Oh, and why eat Schwarzbrot when there are so many amazing Vollkornbrot options that taste so much better. Wouldn't you agree? Radish salad tastes better if, for the dressing, you don't use vinegar but lemon juice instead. I wouldn't eat it pure just with salt, though. That just sounds very Bavarian Biergarten Brotzeit style to me. You know it's the kind of environment where people would eat Pressack and Sülze to accompany their beer for breakfast like you wouldn't believe. I could do without Käsefondue. It's just way too boring, both the taste and the experience. And if you want a recommendation for a really hard drink: have you tried Brottrunk before? ;-)
