You always go in to great detail. Would you consider doing a video about connecting a second monitor to an M1 iMac. There's a lot of confusion on this topic. Can't find a good video about it and that's all that's holding up my purchase, gotta have that second monitor. 😉

Contrary to many, I do like the way these new iMac's look, and think that they are a nice touch to all their legacies going back to 1998, EXCEPT for the glossy screen itself. I also agree with your comments on the ports. Otherwise, well done, Apple.

Excellent overview. While most of the reviews I've seen so far mainly deal with the aesthetics of the new iMac, you truly overview the some of the issues that may be problematic when it comes to storage of files, (for which I uses an external hard drive as for my iTunes library) and photo-editing. Don't think I'll be purchasing this one, but rather keep the 21.5" I have, and eventually upgrade to a 27" when the time comes. thank you

I got the top spec M1 iMac for photography work. I sold my mid range 2017 27" iMac as I got the M1 MacBook Air and was simply blown away by it! I love this machine! But yeah the lack of ports are a bit crappy. Having adaptors isn't the end of the world though. The white bezels I'm not madly in love with. I wish they had kept the purple variant (the one I have) that deep purple at the back of the computer, its so nice. The lilac at the front is ok. If apple hadn't did this with the colour options I totally would have got the red colour, but that salmon orange/pink at the front is gross lol. Great video, fair and accurate I reckon. Just think what the next 5 years will be like!!! Excited much? lol. I am such a geek.

Apple has plenty of room to develop the product line-up by implementing the M1 in multi-package mainboards....consider Dual M1 iMacs or Quad M1 iMacs...this method allows for more ports, more RAM and more performance without fabbing a new M1X or M2 chip just yet

Max, Thank you for this informative video, The warning about the fans or lack thereof, specifically the presence of only one fan in the entry level 24” monitor, the resultant heat generation and fan noise led me to cancel my order for the entry level 24” iMac and get the more expensive model with two fans and 8 cores, hoping for a silent user experience. You are a great source of actionable intelligence, a fountain of wisdom of all things Mac! One final thing, the app for turning down the fan is one more thing to worry about and may degrade the parts of the iPad over time in subtle ways that you may not have envisioned.

@Diminish12 its been fine - I did get a hub so I could use my circa 2015 Apple USB keyboard which has more key travel than Apple's newer generation keyboards, all of which I don't like. I have a 2nd gen Magic keyboard that I use w/my iPad. It's OK. it has more key travel than the one that comes w/the M1 Mac. I'm almost 69 years old and can't get used to minimal key travel. I use the keyboard it came with for only one task, pressing the touch ID button. So I have two keyboards, one legacy USB keyboard in front of me and one sitting on the M1 stand w/in reach to press Touch ID. I don't see an issue w/the four ports. The issue with the ports and the noiser fan is with the lower end model. I got a powered hub because it was more convenient than buying usb-c to lightening cables.

Great review, like the balance between good and bad. And maybe for future graphic tests you could use Metro Exodus, since it is a triple A-Titel and still running on M1 macs. Also, mostly this is a consumer product, I find it weird to not tell the prices with TAX, maybe the average of all taxes of the US. Also the comparison in price to value there should be the component price in it not just the price Apples charges for it. I guess we would all agree that their prices for example their mouse, their keyboard and so on isn't nearly as cheap as they should be compared to what they coast in production. And the development of it is fairly low since they using hardware already existing, especially for the mouse which is going to the dust storage section. Overall with TAX, with upgrade coasts and so on, the price for the value isn't as good as it might seem. Not bad and definitely on a good average level, but not great, the Intel Models just have been so useless expensive to earn more profit. Apple was never a company having a healthy amount of profit, they always tried to drain everything out of the customers and we can be sure, they make a hell of evil profit above a healthy 25% with their iMacs and periphery as well. But well, it will be exciting to see what armV9 Macs will be in performance and how many applications and more triple A-Games like Metro and prosumer software will be running on them as well mid. next year.

From my perspective of working as an engineer for over 35 years (now retired) Apple really missed the mark of integrity for not disclosing that the base model only has one fan. From a design perspective I don't understand why Apple chose to delete the fan that cools the M1 processor. Why not delete the other (left side) fan if it was so important to save a few dollars. (Perhaps that cooling fan is more important??) It appears that Apple purposely removed a fan that would impact performance. Apple should have revealed that in their marketing literature. As such, I give Apple a "D" in integrity. Thanks for your video and for revealing the shortcomings. Apple should immediately apologize for not informing potential customers of loss in performance of the base model.

@transitengineer The macbook air does not need a fan. Of course that will limit its performance, but it does just fine with that reduced performance. They put the M1 in the iPad Pro, with even less room for thermals and even power. And yes, its having to throttle and underclock itself, but it still blows everything else out of the water. If youre trying to make a point, youre not succeeding.

@BFactory did you not read my entire comment? People have been using PCs for a while, the majority of gamers run their systems hot and hard and they still run. Prebuilt Alienwares and the like were never cool and/or quiet. Laptop gamers have it even worse, and again they still run fine. Yes, engineers are right when they say its bad for longevity....but they mean in terms of decades, not single digit years. And when it comes to Apple, people are not going that long before upgrading. Or at least, 95% are not. Please dont try to blame Apple for doing what every other company has been doing without issue.

For Launchpad, go to your Preferences and then Mission Control. From here you select Hot Corners. This is way faster than a button and that's what I've been using for years for things like Start Screensaver, Show Desktop, Mission Control. I laugh when people complain about the magic mouse charge port and not being able to use it when it's charging. The mouse lasts 2-3 months on a charge, and 10 minutes of charging will give you a days of use if you somehow forget. A few times a year, plug in overnight and you will be good to go. So people want to wreck the daily design and aesthetics for something that is only used a few times a year. It's not like an electric car that needs to be plugged in every night or a lawn that needs to be cut every week.

I actually love the design. Almost to the point of buying it, if it wasn't for the fact I'm covid unemployed and havent got 2 cents to rub together. Food first, toys second. But I love it. Apples been stuck in this ultra conservative mindset were its just making the same damn design over and over and over again. But suddenly their industrial designers are off the leash again, and the result if something genuinely new. It wasnt till I was in in the apple store and saw one for real that I realised just how attractive looking this device is. Jonny Ives is gone. Things suddenly start feeling jobs-y again. Guess we know where the problem was. Knock it, but know this: Within 2 years everyones gonna be copying this design.

On the "best sound ever from an iMac" comment - well... there are a few points to consider: 1. Balance across the frequency range 2. Loudness 3. Resolution of sound (how well one can discern sounds in playback, a.k.a. fidelity) I would certainly agree that the new iMac is not anywhere near as loud as the older iMac and iMac Pro. However, (putting my producer hat on), I think the other two qualities - balance across the frequency range and resolution - on the new iMac ARE better. To be sure, I would not want to try to mix productions on the iMac speakers in normal day-to-day work. BUT! I would definitely want to use the iMac's speakers for test playbacks to see how balanced my recording is when NOT played on pro monitors. I think the speakers are very accurate and that there is an even response across the frequency spectrum. A lot of our evaluation of "how good something sounds" is based these days on two or three factors, the main being loudness and how much bass you can hear (or feel). To my ears, the older iMacs are a bit "bass weighted" so they can bring out bass sounds a bit more strongly that would be expected for such small speaker space, and so they will seem to have more "punch" when playing popular music (and dance and EDM, which I even make, myself), but *in my own opinion*, I prefer an even balance across the frequency spectrum - what we often call a "flat" response, because that is better to base the quality of a mix from. Anyone can turn up the bass on their own, after all. So, this is just my ruble, but I think I can understand the basis upon which Apple makes its claim. Admittedly, it comes across strange to most of us because this machine certainly does not have the punch or the bass, but, I like the accuracy I hear. Great video as always, Vadim!

@Max Tech True - I do not know who is whom) Max, yes. Possibly too, the act of listening to speakers through miking that is rather open - it is hard to discern. It might be interesting if there are frequency response charts for these machines, but I doubt Apple makes these available. It could be done with real good mics set at an established fixed distance from the machine and then recorded. If you have two omnidirectional microphones this would probably work best... say at three or four feet from the machine, center and with a set distance apart. I might try about 15-20cm separation (the distance between our ears) for the mics. Just another ruble. I think it would be an interesting test, but for the sake of the consumer or prosumer, it would probably be a lot less important than the other capabilities of these machines. I am truly impressed with the scope and depth of these reviews, and I am eager to see what the WWDC brings for news tomorrow. I work with an i9 15" MacBook Pro and it does a fine job, but I can push it to CPU overload in Pro Tools too easily, and I want to really extend my tracking. Also, I would like to be able to sent 4K at 60Hz to my screen instead of 30Hz which is all this setup seems to allow. Let's see what happens! Have a great day and thank you for your reply!

Good video except for one big point: you keep looking at the base model iMac through your eyes and not it's intended market: entry level. The people who are going to buy the entry-level machine won't notice or care about the issues you mentioned. Apple are supreme penny-pinchers (not a bad thing necessarily) and if it helps them eek out the profit they want by not having a heat sink on one of the fans and it's intended market isn't going to notice, that's completely fine. Would my elderly mother or school-age nephews/nieces notice or care? Absolutely not. Ports? Two ports is completely fine on the entry-level machine. The most anyone will connect to the computer is a flash drive. They won't even do it with a printer since they'll probably use WiFi to connect. In a school? Flash drive. Maybe. If they are allowed. 1Gbe. Again, for the intended market, this is completely fine. 10Gbe is still far from the norm and until they fix the heat issue with that ethernet connection, it's going to be a while. And the type of work being done on these machines won't need it. Yes the Mac mini gets 10Gbe. But it's not the same market either. I saw the new iMac at B&H yesterday and thought it looked absolutely amazing. It's super-sleek. People who complain about the chin tend to be computer-geeks and Internet, well, trolls, who don't know anything about business, marketing and design. The design is iconic. People who buy iMacs don't care about the chin. As you mentioned and as I have when it was released, there is a reason why other computer manufacturers copy the design quite blatantly. Not necessarily because it look awesome, but because it looks like a Mac. You folks do a great job with reviewing gear. One of the best. But you regularly don't think from the viewpoint for the intended market. A piece of entry-level gear shouldn't be held to the same level or expectations as pro gear.

Regarding the fan, yeah wow, didn't know that. That's simply terrible for the chip and saving a few cents per machine. You'd think in any sense you'd couple the hot CPU with you know, the fan doing the work connected to the heat pipes. Guess not. Great review though!

The planned obsolescence of the cheaper iMac looks like it can be alleviated by modding it like INE can do with the MacBook Air to make it run at top speeds even without a fan. Shame on apple for purposefully crippling their entry level model to prevent it from keeping up with the more expensive models. Until they lose money from such moves they will never learn to just do the right thing.

I gather that most users that are really concerned with audio quality don't rely on internal speakers. I have not seen comments anywhere about adding external speakers, which ones sound best and especially homepods. I happen to think a couple full sized homepods would sound excellent. I assume pairing would be done via airplay. Also, is it possible to pair the homepods and keep the internal speakers running too. Any comments based on real life experience would be helpful.

The largest headache is, that Big Sur has a very poor support for 4k/UHD. I was shocked about that poor windows programming and bad resolution. I did send the first M1 Mac mini back, because of that reason, beside slow processor reaction and long delays compared to Intel NUC Windows PC. I do love the video editing features of Macs, lacking that painfully in MS Windows 10/11. Regarding that iMac: I do not understand why that amount of aluminium should not be capable of cooling that 45W processor. I am using passive cooled PCs since many years. Just upgraded to a silent Cirrus 7 AMD 4750g System.

I would get at least 1 TB SSD, and an external drive (I have a Western Digital 2 & 4 TB drive with a USB-C connector and USB-A adapter). I would not want the base model. I am waiting for the M1X MacBook Pro or M1X larger I-Mac. I would love to get at least 32 GB, since I want to run Premiere Pro, After Effects, Logic and Final Cut Pro, plus other Adobe Programs along with Motion, Compressor and Main Stage. But I do love the look of the I-Mac and I don't mind the colors. I agree the Chin is so Iconic, you don't even need the Apple Logo in front, and when the Machine is on, you will know it is an Apple computer. I don't have anything to plug Ethernet into. While most of the reviews I've seen so far mainly deal with the aesthetics of the new iMac, you truly overview the some of the issues that may be problematic when it comes to storage of files, (for which I uses an external hard drive as for my iTunes library) and photo-editing. Apple has plenty of room to develop the product line-up by implementing the M1 in multi-package mainboards....consider Dual M1 iMacs or Quad M1 iMacs...this method allows for more ports, more RAM and more performance without fabbing a new M1X or M2 chip just yet
Vor 11 MonateRichard Barg
Max, Thank you for this informative video, The warning about the fans or lack thereof, specifically the presence of only one fan in the entry level 24” monitor, the resultant heat generation and fan noise led me to cancel my order for the entry level 24” iMac and get the more expensive model with two fans and 8 cores, hoping for a silent user experience. You are a great source of actionable intelligence, a fountain of wisdom of all things Mac! One final thing, the app for turning down the fan is one more thing to worry about and may degrade the parts of the iPad over time in subtle ways that you may not have envisioned.
Vor 11 MonateRichard Barg
Vor 8 MonateDiminish12
How has your M1 been so far? Have you needed to plug and unplug lightening ports since it only has 4? Did you get a USB hub to fix this issue.

For your launchpad, just set up hot corners. I set up the bottom left corner of the screen for launch pad so I just swipe my mouse down there and I can easily access all the apps. Much faster than the keyboard shortcut anyway, in my opinion.
Vor 7 MonateBenSalomon
But well, it will be exciting to see what armV9 Macs will be in performance and how many applications and more triple A-Games like Metro and prosumer software will be running on them as well mid. next year.
Vor 11 MonateMike Godard

Vor 7 TageTim Gurr

Vor 11 MonateAron Faine
@BFactory did you not read my entire comment? People have been using PCs for a while, the majority of gamers run their systems hot and hard and they still run. Prebuilt Alienwares and the like were never cool and/or quiet. Laptop gamers have it even worse, and again they still run fine. Yes, engineers are right when they say its bad for longevity....but they mean in terms of decades, not single digit years. And when it comes to Apple, people are not going that long before upgrading. Or at least, 95% are not. Please dont try to blame Apple for doing what every other company has been doing without issue.
Vor 11 MonateNikHem343
I really like the design, but the bezel making it more recognizable is really not an argument to make for the user. One could argue that they could have made something that people liked more, but didn't because this is helping their brand more.

I miss one big disadvantage! The storage and memory are NOT upgradable nor replaceable! If you have little memory the machine will start to swap on the disc wearing it out fast. If it does wear out your only only option is to buy a new machine or replace the complete main board IF they even allow mac service points to replace them.

How do you rate its performance in dealing ( open, edit, save) with large photoshop (.psb) files ( like 10gb)?

Thanks for the site it's excellent information.I have the upgraded model of the iMac 24. I'm very interested about the fan and the speaker. Im considering a Satechi USB-c clamp hub for the 24 inch iMac. It attaches on the bottom right of my computer. My concern is will the hub interfer with my speakers and cause my computer to heat up.

I hope Apple makes this iMac in 27”. I sometimes watch movies from computer, and I am too used for bigger screen than 24”. Especially if there is two people watching it.

Thanks (this vid is Max but it’s hard to know) I totally agree on volume, but to my ears even at similar volumes the 2020 27” iMac sounds better.. I even re-listened to them yesterday to make sure but that’s my opinion.

Thinking about buying this for my homeoffice. Just wondering whether you can also use the imac as an external monitor (i.e. extend screen of laptop). Ideally, I would be able to hook a windows pc (and from time to time a macbook pro) to it..Would this be possible?

I like this Mac. I want it but as a software engineer and soon content creator, I want a little bigger screen and an upgraded cpu. Is there an M1x or M2 iMac in the pipeline? I’m new to the iMac line so maybe It’s the iMac pro? Im not sure. Im willing to hold off for a larger screen more pro version if others here in the comments have heard any rumors that this will come?

The fan issue/design is so disappointing on the base model. I feel like the $200 upgrade is mostly for the fan. I know you also get 2 more ports, an extra GPU core, and Touch ID but I’d rather spend that money on memory and SSD upgrades.

Regarding the fan, yeah wow, didn't know that. That's simply terrible for the chip and saving a few cents per machine. You'd think in any sense you'd couple the hot CPU with you know, the fan doing the work connected to the heat pipes. Guess not. Great review though!

Vor 10 MonateCarlos R

We use wireless at our house.
