There is probably one part of the product management job we can all agree is the hardest - people. People are unpredictable, have strong opinions and unconscious biases, and many people in your organisation have more power than you, yet are wrong just as often. In this illuminating talk from Mind the Product San Francisco 2017 Janna Bastow, Co-Founder of Mind the Product and Co-Founder and CEO of ProdPad, shares her own stories of dealing with people, and how she handles the toughest part of the job.

That Pager Duty thing was definitely staged and so fake! First, those folks are wearing Pager Duty tee shirts! Second, they are conveniently located in the Queen's Deck. Third, they have clearly practiced singing in unison. This is not some random singing!! So fake. Also, Dave criticized Ever Note without offering any solution to the problem of profitability.

I really dislike the arrogant presentation style. Dave ridicules Smalt and the Pulsar products for the wrong reasons and that does not speak well of him. Just because he does not understand the rationale of adding certain features does not mean that the creators are stupid. Quite the contrary, it makes the "ridiculer" a fool. Keeping track of dispensed salt is important to some people, they might want to strictly monitor their and their family's sodium intake. It does not make the creators stupid, it might just be a niche Dave is completely ignorant of. 16° angle of the brush might be something experimental and important Oral-B figured out, it does not have to be something stupid and unnecessary. There is insufficient information available to conclude on any of that. I generally really dislike when people ridicule or over-simplify things without having looked in depth into them. It is very easy to ridicule something not obviously successful, but it is not at all a sign of wisdom.

The OralB toothbrush example is just the speaker's arrogance of ignorance. The reason electric toothbrushes went to sealed inductive designs is that they live in wet environments (bathrooms) and are in contact with the electrolytic fluids of the body (saliva, mucosal linings, et al.). Sealing them makes them significantly safer by preventing the possibility of water intrusion leading to electrical shorts (electrocution and/or fire). Using rechargeable batteries makes them easier to transport and more reliable to resupply. Using inductive energy transfer means you don't need to hassle with connectors and the openings and electrical contacts that connectors introduce. Consumers overwhelming prefer modern electric toothbrushes over the previous battery-replaceable designs: (1) safer, (2) more convenient. They also last longer than the battery-replaceable ones as the sealed nature eliminates the most common cause of failure -- corrosion.

I got a better one than the salt example. I met with a guy who put his family's money into a thing that turned your backdoor with a cat door, into a litterbox. You simply take the back door, that you know..people use..and attach the little box to the door so that when the cat goes through the cat door (no longer able to go outside through the door) he now enters his litterbox. He thought this is a great idea. This was at a trade show. I asked him: 1? What if I want to let the cat out? 2) What if I want to BBQ on the deck and my guests have to look at the litterbox swinging around on my backdoor? 3) Then what about the cat freaking out when he's pooping and I open the door? 4) And do I now have to go outside in the cold, unhook the litterbox and clean it? I think it was something he hooked up for his wife who complained about the litter smell so it could be outside, using a door they probably never used. So I went back to the booth the next day and the poor man had packed up and left. I really wish I kept the sellsheet he had made up for that thing. But yes, that was an early experience into product management. :)

Need a Project Management/Task management tool that won't hurt your pocket? I am temporarily giving away any commission leads I receive on sign-up through Paypal. So you will get 20% total off... 10% off in checkout and another 10% once I confirm signup. You might be asking why? The answer is simple.... I truly believe this tool is the best for tracking any milestones you want to achieve and a true chat alternative for anyone on your team that you might have. In order for them to keep hiring Developers and making quality updates, they need more recurring customers. Think of it as an investment of your money(and time). They have IOS, Android, and desktop apps. - Why use Skype as chat tool?? Nifty has it covered. -Why use a high priced PM tool that charges for every single permission-based guest? Nifty has it covered with unlimited. -Your rates would be locked in for the current price that it is at now. Please don't miss out. -Money-back guarantee from Nifty if you don't like it. Do be mindful of their Roadmap and the future updates they will have before making your final decision. If you need more info, feel free to comment or check out the site. https://niftypm.com?fpr=20off =]

Deploying #OKRs & hand-holding several #highperformance organizations to develop #OKRpractices, we continue to see at least 2 prominent trends for organizations aspiring to go the #OKRway: a) Far too many organization fail long before they get started; b) Secondly, there is a difference between being #OKRReady & being #OKRChampion. These organizations fall short before ever reaching the level of maturity where their organization is fully aligned and transparent, accomplishing their goals with a collaborative, cross-functional approach. That's what led to The Brew’s OKR Capability Maturity Index (https://thebrew.in/okr-capability-maturity-index-okr-champion-unlock-value/), objectively gauging across 10 elemental dimensions of OKR methodology, it helps leaders & organizations ascertain critical gaps to reach program maturity, realizing the fullest potential of #organizationaldevelopment. #measurewhatmatters Also, see if this tipping point reads on OKRs, drawing on our experiences & observations – sums up the transformational nature, its application, the best practices & it’s deployment. a) Key Lessons learnt from OKR Case Studies: While the transformational OKR sound simplistic at a conceptual level, there is a lot under the hood that crystallizes when one set’s foot on the OKR journey (essentially, bcos more than a management concept, OKRs are more of a philosophy – culminating in to behaviors, one has to subscribe to it in spirit & actions) – not to sound preachy, but often these reflections come back in the face, should any of these be overlooked from OKR deployment playbook.(https://thebrew.in/key-lessons-from-okr-case-studies/)#OKRCasestudies b) The Ultimate OKR Checklist for high performance OKR deployment – 11 step comprehensive guide to reap best results from OKRs (https://thebrew.in/the-ultimate-okr-checklist-for-best-okr-results/) #UltimateOKRChecklist c) A 6 part comprehensive OKR Manual on demystifying OKRs: Across these 6 part read, we demystify Objectives – Key results, from theory (Part 1), it’s application & good OKR examples (Part 2), the best practices (Part 3), to it’s deployment (Part 4), the common mistakes (Part 5) and OKR Tracking & OKR CFR (Part 6) - #OKRManual #OKRGuide See all of it here: https://thebrew.in/demystifying-okrs-get-best-value-objectives-key-results/ Summing it up, #OKRs are simply transformational ! When deployed to its potential, it not only enables teams to contribute to organizational objectives directly, but also establishes broad alignment, accountability, autonomy, focus & transparency across the entire organization.

TLDW: 1. listen to your customers… to deeply understand their scenarios and problems 2. stop listening to your customers… when it comes to building solutions 3. watch the competition… to better understand customers problems, reactions & feedback 4. don't watch the competition… you don’t HAVE blindly copy every feature 5. be a thief… take ideas from other products/people that help solve your customer problems 6. get paid… validate that you create value that customers will pay for 7. don’t only worry about getting paid… appeal to your customers social and emotional needs, not just functional needs 8. speed up! Inaction & delay can be costly 9. say no… for the right reasons. you can do anything once you stop trying to do everything 10. don't be a visionary… products don't need visionaries, they need product managers who are obsessed with understanding the customers problem and solving it. 11. don't confuse yourself with your customers… you may use your product, but you are NOT ALL your customers 12. be dumb… you don’t know everything. So keep learning & always advocate for customers
