This one version of the DS was called ID. It had a mechanical gearbox and consequently clunch to change gears. When the DS had a semi-automatic gearbox without clunch and a tiny "stick" to change gears.

My father owned many of these when I was kid in Chicago. He is in his 80s and still nuts about them. He even wrote books about them with all the tips and tricks he learned about maintaining them over the years. My first car was a 1972 Citroen GS Break. Although I don't have the courage to own myself today, I still love the DS.

One thing I've noticed after watching about 400 of Jay's videos is that he tends to spend more time in the oncoming lane than his own lane. Reminds me of the people here in Ohio texting on the cell phones when driving...left of center, more left of center, even more left of center, then JAM back into the correct lane. But, Jay is actually watching where he is going when he's doing it. Hey, Jay, might want to go to the eye doctor and maybe consider having your eyes checked!

That Citroën ad scared me. The music was horror movie worthy, and the fish... there was a... mer-man thing. How many violin strings were broken to make that song? Overall, if I were a person living in 1953, to spare myself millions of nightmares about fish, I would not buy that car. But the suspension is nice!

your very lucky to be able to own one and in such beautiful condition, Ive been driving Citroens for years , Ive had two Bx's a AX a Xantia, A 2cv special and now I have a C5 Mk2 exclusive with the magic carpet ride suspension , the best suspension was fitted to the Xantia activa models, such a shame Citroen are moving away from the old suspension system. no need to wait for the suspension on the MK 2 C5 exclusive its on an electric pump now , plip the alarm and the car rises ready to get into and drive off. with 130 bhp on a 2 litre diesel turbo 6 speed box, its a heavy car but fast enough for most petrol heads to drive. I bought a Lexia for it so I can read the fault codes owing to computerization these days, the ECU will remember electrical faults if you dont delete them after doing repairs to the car. I always check it with the lexia once a month to make sure there are no faults on the ecu. maintaining the battery is very important with these computerized cars these days a slightly low voltage on the battery can mean you loose power steering because of low pressure on the electric hydraulic pump. never had such problems in the days of the DS, GS, CX, BX and Xantia they all had a mechanical pump driven by the engine. Im taking out the dual mass flywheel soon on the C5 and converting the clutch to a single old style flywheel for cheaper clutch changes and more reliable towing without damaging the dull mass flywheel springs valeo make a conversion kit.

The Citröen DS became an international movie star in the Fantomas film series. In the second film, the titular character and villain escapes using a DS that turns into a jet plane and evades the authorities by flying into the sky. Citröen later used this in one of their advertising commercials. Ever since this car has appeared in many films portraying a car from the future.

This Citroen was imported to Rhodesia in the 1970s and assembled outside Salisbury at a place called Willowvale. In early 1979 I was able to realise my dream and bought a second hand DS/5 - the 5 speed version - white roof and blue body. Sadly I was only able to keep it for a few years because parts and service became impossible - that is cost and availability and I gave to to a relative in Zimbabwe. I drove it from Salisbury to Johannesburg and back several times - 1100 kms one way - and I remember getting out at the end of the trip and not feeling stiff and tired. If I had FU money I would have another in a heartbeat. You forgot to show where the spare wheel is normally kept in front of the radiator.

DS stands for Déesse which indeed means Godess in French. Great video from a truly passionate man. It is awesome to get to watch cars that are not the usual sports or luxury cars but were fabulous nonetheless in their time and still are to this day. You don't get to see the Delahaye, Talbot, Facel Vega, Autobleu, Matra, Brasier, Salmson, Chénard & Walcker, Hotchkiss, Darracq, Panhard, Rolland-Pilain anymore. They are gone. This is part of the World Automotive Heritage and these long forgotten brands bare a few are only for the French part with all its exuberance, quirkiness and sheer innovation as well.

When I lived in the UK in the sixties I had the pleasure of owning and driving three of them. One was an ID and the other two a DS, all incredible cars. The engine had an aluminum cylinder head and many previous owners used the wrong type of antifreeze which eroded the cylinder head causing a water leak. I had to take the engine apart and I replaced the eroded parts of the cylinder head with Araldite , I think that was the name, but anyway It worked , no more water leaks.

Thanks for this pleasant report on this fantastic car I have always dreamed to own. As I'm French I could find one in France but there are not cheap if in good shape and, as I'm retired now unfortunately, I cannot afford anymore to buy one. Anyway, just some clarifications since I know that from an American perspective, all what is French is basically weird but there are sometimes some reasons: 1. The car was designed with this revolutionary suspension for comfort and road holding, not because the French roads were bad. Well, they were not that smooth at the time for sure but not worse than in the neighbouring countries. Moreover no other French manufacturer (Renault, Peugeot, Panhard ...) tried to develop a specific suspension, whatever were the road conditions. 2. The mirror is not down "because it's French" (btw it's the only car with this design) but because the back window is lower than the windshield so if it was in its usual place, the driver couldn't see what's behind. As simple as that. 3. "Being French you gotta have a cigarette lighter". Thank you for the compliment but ... no: there have always been a cigarette lighter and an ashtray on all European cars since decades. Personally I have a 6 years old VW Golf right now and it's fitted with a cigarette lighter as well, even if almost nobody smokes in cars nowadays. Anyway I can remove the lighter and replace it on demand by anything like a mobile GPS or a phone charger or whatever. Greetings from France

Vor Monat
Al Grayson
Al Grayson

To drive with one rear wheel removed the opposite front tire has the pressure lowered. The same side front tire pressure is increased, as the remaining rear tire. AND, the suspension is raised to maximum, making it rigid. Otherwise, the brake drum will hit the road. André Garnier, formerly the Citroen and Panhard dealer in Miami, removed one rear wheel swing arm and adjusted the tire pressures to drive it on 3 wheels at normal ride height.

My father has one, which we took to many trips through France. Life does not get any better. The older generation frequently greet us. the suspension... nothing compares to it. Once my father asked me to slow down on a winding cobble road in the north of France. I asked him why. Well do you see the car in front of you rattling and bucking? It is an older car, be gentle. Park it in the late afternoon in a small town square, sit on a terrace and enjoy the view! In stead of getting a parking ticket, we got the thumbs up. The hotel owner who offered us his parking garage... The panoramic view of the french countryside sliding along... The car is met with a lot of love from the french people. So sad there aren't many around anymore. The french goverment took older cars off the roads with subsidies. The ones that remained were exported, many to Holland, where my father lives. @Jay Leno's Garage, did you find a 5 speed already? Makes for a much improved driving experience. (when you get one, get a new set of rubber covers for the pedals as well ;) If not, I am sure I can bring you into contact with a spares dealer who will most probably have one.

10:14 I rode in a Citroen years ago. It's comfort was in large part the very cushy soft cloth-covered foam rubber seats. Very comfortable, a bit too spongy though. THEE most comfortable American car was the 1987 Buick Park Avenue. Super wide soft aromatic leather-covered seat cushions, on top of semi-firm seat frames. Unbelievably sumptuous and sensual. Instead of eating in restaurants, we used to order take-out and eat the food in the Park Avenue while parked in the restaurant parking lot.

As it was an unknown car in the USA, of potential buyers thought it was broken because it was in the low position. A top-of-the-range model with very few km. As he was Swiss he knew the model, he offered 25 dollars and no one proposed more, believing she was down. When the car get up at the time of starting, they suddenly realized that he had missed a great deal, a superb Citroën DS 23 ie Pallas for 25 dollars. My friend's uncle left with a really big smile.

Also one the safest cars on the road at that time. I saw two guys in the car above t bone a Holden sedan at 70mph and survive. In a high speed crash the engine bay absorbed the impact and the motor finished under the the cabin floor. The Citroen cabin is safe by desgn rather than weight. Also at a time when impaled on the steering column was a likely cause of death in many cars the Citroen wheel protected the driver folding on impact..Two dead in the Holden and the two in the Citroen walked away from the crash.

When introduced in 1955 the DS Citroen was very innovative and way ahead of its time. It’s biggest problem was the extensive use of hydraulics making it expensive to maintain. I traveled hundreds of miles on dirt roads in Africa in early 1960’s and the car would just glide along as if riding a magic carpet. A really fine car.

Citroen never would seal the hydraulic system reservoir. As the fluid level fell and rose, moisture and oxygen along with dust is sucked through the vent hole in the reservoir cap. The cars from 1954 until 1967 used brake fluid Liquide Hydraulique Vegetale (castor bean oil and methanol), Liquide Hydraulique Synthetique (basically DOT3 brake fluid) and LHS2 (improved lubricity), 1969 in the USA. The later cars used LHM (Liquide Hydraulique Mineral), very similar to ATF, hydraulic jack oil, Red Oil (used in older airplane landing gear struts and many industrial machines), except dyed green.
