Williams's time holding out as a true independent in F1 could be coming to an end, with the team undergoing a strategic review to safeguard its future that could result in all or part of it being sold. In this video, Edd Straw traces Williams's downturn from 1990s championship-winning powerhouse to back-to-back last-place finishes in the constructors' standings in 2018 and '19, looking at the key moments, decisions, missed opportunities and failures that contributed to its slide down the F1 pecking order.

Has Claire Williams been a positive or negative influence on the team?

If we're living through the Darkest Timeline for Williams, then in an alternate universe where Williams doesn't make these mistakes, we'd see Nico Hulkenberg winning in a Newey-designed, BMW-powered, Martini-liveried car funded by Stroll & BMW. Just think about Nico in the white Martini car with the BMW engine noise.

I think Frank was too proud and inflexible, to secure financing and retain the best talent. Such it is, with brilliant, self-motivated people, they often have amazing talents that initially propels them to success, but ultimately their fierce independence wirks against the bigger picture of cooperation and growth.

I dont necessarily agree on the points about Newey or BMW being part of their downfall. While yes Newey went on to success with McLaren and then Red Bull, he became less and less the wunderkind people were used to. Look at McLaren. During his 7 years or so with them they only won two titles. With Red Bull their history has been spotty too, with Newey actually preferring to take more of a back seat and design outside things like boats. So even had Newey stuck around, who knows how much success Williams would have had. As for BMW, yeah selling out to them may have worked in the short term, the fact that they did not exactly set the world alight as a manufacturer team anyway and then pissed off a few years later, would have potentially left Williams in even worse shape.

I was an avid followers of F1 in the early 90s. Sad to see the privateers struggle and failing since then. Feel something a miss when you don’t see Benetton, Jordan, Tyrell, Sauber, etc from the constructors lineup. It’s only McLaren left now, although I’m not sure if they still a privateers.

The reason is the ban on cigarettes sponsorship, the F1 being shit for over a decade, the broadcasting on payed only channels. All this means sponsors don't want to get involved with F1. It's indicative that teams with history and lots of fans like williams and mclaren go without sponsors.

We not gonna talk about Claire Williams ? She may be a lovely woman etc, but by far not a team leader, if you look at most other team leaders they have being racers at some point in their lives or being in the sport for a long time, racing is in their blood and you can see they have a drive to win, passionate about it, It seems Claire showed up one day then became team leader, and it shows by the performance of the team since shes being in the position, i dont see the same drive in her or passion to win like what i see in other team boss's, shes seems very, oh well, at least you tried kinda woman, thats not a team leader... Come one Frank, time to stand up and sack your daughter....

feel bad for Claire.... I think the damage was done long before she arrived with season after season under the technical leadership of Sam Michael who caused the drain of all the smart people at Williams from the early 2000s thanks to his poor leadership... why does no one ever mention him?? Blame Frank for not removing a poor performer at the top sooner

Firing Damon Hill while he just won the title for the team was one of the things that sparked off a huge series of punishments for the team. They replaced him with Frentzen who didn't even come close to Villeneuve while Damon had a good lead on him. Loosing Newey was also a result of the arrogance Williams always displayed towards any team members. They where always ''replaceable'' But that they would be punished this hard.. No one could have seen that coming. O yes.. What also doesn't help for a private team that soldiers on to stay private is the idiotic way the incomes in F1 are divided. With Ferrari striking up 100 million extra just because they are Ferrari (barf) is not good. If Williams was only 12 million short after such a disastrous season as 2019 than dividing the incomes in F1 in an honest way would easily safe the team from financial problems. Shows that F1 is still run as badly as back in the days with Balestre and co. Its sad actually.. If I was Ferrari I would thank no to that money. I am sure they loose a lot of fans by this bs. How can you still be a big fan of Ferrari and be proud at the same time.. Worst thing is that even with this huge unfair advantage they still don't manage to win any titles.

Randomly, YouTube showed me a vid today of Williams driver, Ralf Schumacher, stuck on his own jacks, at the front, at the start of a GP. That got me thinking....I don't think they've ever been a good team in terms of organisation or management, they were just lucky that they had periods where they had a decent designer, or engine, or both, and that camouflaged the fact the basic outfit has always been run like an privateer F3 team...a bunch of very keen blokes, on a budget. Remember Mansell's wheel flying off after a crucial pit stop? If there was any team you could bet over a season that would screw a pit stop, it was always Williams. They are very like Tyrrell, with a '70's mindset, but he ran out of money long before they did. Top management solely carries the blame: Head told every driver how to drive - some, like Jones, Rosberg, Mansell ignored him, but others got crushed in the garage before they hit the track. Frank himself always seems to have a 'bunker' attitude. Pissing off Honda and BMW was a major own goal, but it's deeper than that. I think he always saw himself as an 'independent' even when he had a works deal, and that frightens sponsors....not to mention his engine partner. Claire is terminally hopeless....but to be fair she's been given an awfully buggered up inheritance....who could have done a better job with what she was given?

just get rid of williams once and for all. they scored one point last season and don't deserve a place in f1. now that they are for sale they have a small chance to regain some places but it is unlikely. for everyone's sake just get rid of them and don't let them come back

Vor 26 Tage
Carlos Ferrari

Most if not all of those points are in hindsight and hindsight is always 20/20 so it doesn't apply. The #1 reason for the team's decline was the well known arrogance of Frank Williams who would always refuse to pay to keep their stars. And without stars you can't have a constellation so that's why they are in the dark… Any of those names mentioned in this video could/should be kept - including champion drivers who weren't mentioned but got sacked as Frank refused to pay them a champion's salary. I would like to see both William's and McLaren back at the top but I wouldn't be so gutted if any team is forced out due to bad management. It's a business and as a business it can only be viable if well managed.

The money distribution was purposely rigged - to favor Ferrari mostly. If Ferrari would leave F1, racing would become so much better! We could then go to a fair money distribution. Ferrari is the evil empire full of cheating, corruption, and politics. However, F1 could or would lose close to half their fans if Ferrari dropped out. Not sure why people are fans of that crooked team? I am more of an Aston-Martin fan, thus I hope Racing Point will start beating Ferrari already this year when F1 finally starts again.

Good analysis, you hit it spot on. I think that Patrick and Frank stuck around too long, and Claire Williams can't fill their shoes. McLaren said YES to Mercedes, Williams should have done the same to BMW. They missed great opportunity with BMW, when you look back and partnership with BMW, they were unconcentrated, sloppy and made many mistake which are forbidden if you want to be champion.

Williams was top dog from 85 to 87. They didnt win more championships because they lacked a clear nr1 pilot. Too many points scattered between Mansell and Piquet... They took 3 years to recover from Honda ditching them and signing with Mclaren, from mid 91 season all the way to the start of 94 season they had easily the best two cars on the grid.

The only way to be successful in F1 now is to build a team around a driver. Have a superstar driver and attract talent and sponsors long term. It's been this way since the Schumacher/Todt/Brawn Ferrari years. But Williams didn't seem to notice. They always had the attitude that the team is the important thing and the driver is somewhat disposable. This was never going to work against teams using the Ferrari 90s/00s mold that worked and built up momentum with drivers and key people over the course of multiple seasons. I like Frank and Claire but they've held onto these old fashioned attitudes for too long and it's cost them. F1 got bloated and financially ridiculous during the good times largely thanks to the manufacturers like Mercedes and Ferrari who have way too much control over the sport and who they supply their ridiculously over-complicated engines to. Now F1 will pay the price and it's going to be ugly. The teams on the entry list will be unrecognisable in a couple of years, but will probably be for the better.

In my opinion, Williams' decline actually started with the 1991 World Champion Ayrton Senna's refusal to join Williams in 1992, which is mainly because of his *STUPID* loyalty to the failing Honda (despite being superior from 1988 to 1991)! If Ayrton Senna could just ditch McLaren-Honda and replace Riccardo Patrese (joining Williams-Renault) in 1992, he wouldn't have to test an IndyCar (to scare McLaren into making a better car for him following Honda's first withdrawal from F1) on December 1992, waiting for another year before he could finally join Williams (because of Alain Prost's return in 1993) and suffering from PTSD (due to his constantly failing relationship, Michael Schumacher frequently "bullying" him on track, Benetton creating an illegal car, losing in front of his home fans despite starting from pole position (he could still tolerate Nigel Mansell winning the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1992), witnessing the heavy crash of Rubens Barrichello (his fellow protege, who would later become Michael Schumacher's "bully victim" at Ferrari) and witnessing the tragic death of Roland Ratzenberger; these events caused him to lose a lot of focus (which leads to his infamous death) at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix; his first lapse of concentration since the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix) after joining Williams in 1994! 😡

Senna would have left Williams 1996 anyway after he catch up to Frangio's 5 Championships to join Ferrari and to embarrass himself with that piece of junk F310. 1992-2004 there were only two chances to be World Champion: 1. Drive a car designed by Adrian Newey. 2. Your name is Michael Schumacher.
