@lemayo yes, but there are many types of metalworking. Building heavy steel structures is dirty and smelly (smoke etc). I got tired of that after 40 years… I am proud of the things I made. There are many ways to work metal and make many wonderful things. I’m quite satisfied to admire such metal work and content to work with my beautiful wood now. Cheers 🙂

@Ben Richards You know, some of my friends justify the mandates because to them it's worth it in order to apply more coercion to make people get it. They don't seem willing to admit/accept that actually, a large proportion of those who truly are against it (not just "hesitant") will change careers rather than risk their health. Now so many hospitals etc are very low on staff and somehow people still won't admit that that's all due to their decision to fire people for not taking an experimental medical treatment.

When hand easing the corners I like to use a block of wood and sandpaper to start. Hold it at a 45 degree angle and sand lengthwise, paying attention to maintain a constant flat width. Then just hand sand without the block, just smoothing the corners. This helps maintain a consistent radius. Really helps when you have wood with large variations of hardness.

Beautiful work! I have made a couple of mantels like this. I don't have a big drill press so I made a jig to use a Forstner bit with an extension shaft. Not a woodworker and don’t have the fancy tools but I did a similar one for my wife. 300ish year old chestnut beam from an old factory, I left the wild edge wild on the front, with the noriginal dings and notches. Filled the cracks with epoxy as you did, but built up dams everywhere I could with UV setting epoxy, then used aluminum duct tape for the rest. Still had minor leaks and used way more epoxy than I expected, it pretty happy with the result. Additional challenge was that I didn’t want to (nor did I have the tools to) sand it perfectly flat, so all the epoxy had to be brought to surface level but not higher. Finished it with a heavy wax that was worked into the wood with a nylon brush for a smooth touchable (if imperfect) surface. Different end result than yours, but different goal as well. Beautiful work as always!

Derby Western Australia ;) Looks unreal! Thanks for always running through even the basics in every video you do, I feel like it really helps aspiring woodworkers to draw up a plan in their head of how they will approach a project. Quick question: Did you learn anything new about the clear sealing beforehand? or whether it is absolutely necessary? I only ask because you sealed the piece at the beginning with the clear epoxy to stop the staining from the black that you filled with. However, when you cut it to size and squared it up that obviously exposed the wood deeper into the piece and I noticed the black fill epoxy had dripped out in sections but then it didn't seem like it was an issue at all when using the belt sander. Thanks again!
