$2400 Headphones? Sennheiser HD 820!

Hm.
Hm.

Tried these at a convention. Not a fan at all, I prefer my Beats by Dre over these, way better bass in the Beats. Looks like headphones for snobs and dorks.

You should note and underline these are dynamic headphones. Very expensive for dynamic drivers. Sony now has the fastest dynamic drivers, with 125k Hertz sensitivity.

Opened backs are made for studio environment and/or home or office usage where the audio bleeds wouldn't matter. You don't use them for outside usage or anything like that, so being "open-backed" is not a bad thing in any way since they are not made to be used in aforementioned scenarios where the bleeding is an issue.

monej Correct but thanks to the internet few recognize this. If I could describe the experience. When I was in primary school I always used cheap twenty dollar earphones you can get at any local store but when I finally got a expensive pair for the first which was Monster Turbines I immediately noticed how much I was missing. I was hearing thing I never heard before and I loved it. Everyone is focused on the price and associating it with greed but the issue is that this isn’t meant for consumers or even beginning producers but is meant for full time producers who who are used to shelling out money for equipment. The fact that this is on amazon is what misleads everyone to think this is for the average consumer and a blatant greedy attempt at a cash grab with a bunch of fancy thing to justify it’s price.

Why would it need to go from 12 to 48,000 Hz of people with super amazing hearing can only hear 16,000 Hz???? I understand why you want it to go that low but 48,000 Hz just seems way too high for no reason

Vor 14 Tage

+Tybera I like that explanation you just gave. Changes my understanding completely, thank you

Vor 6 Tage
Tybera
Tybera

High Hz means the driver can move very very very fast with a lot of dynamic range, this means that it can go from 10 to 16,000Hz faster than your brain can posibly process it. The reason this is important is separation, positioning, and imaging. It doesn't matter that it can play up to 48,000 Hz, that's just a way to say that the driver can vibrate fast. What all that comes down to is that with these you would be able to separate all of the instruments and their sounds in a track without them interfering one one another because each is able to have its time to be processed in the wave. He mentions it at minute 7. Normally headphones that only hit 20,000Hz or 24,000 Hz means they can only move that fast, so they will have an issue being free to move back and forth, then you get bass muddying up mid tones and pulling down highs, because the driver has an issue going from 10 Hz to 10,000 Hz quickly and giving each instrument it's time. People should stop thinking of "frequency response" as "noise waves the driver can produce" and instead think of it as how quickly a driver can move between frequencies.

Vor 6 Tage
Collin Beal
Collin Beal

Yeah. That is why it sounds more spacious. There is a harmonic series of overtones that determine timbre. Not having the inaudible range present alters the timbral qualities of the music and makes it seem artificially closed-off. You can't hear the difference, of course, but it's something that you can feel.

Vor 12 Tage
Logan Bills
Logan Bills

To add on to what he just said, there are also harmonics to take into consideration. Some audible frequencies in the track may have harmonics in the super high frequencies. Have drivers that can produce those frequencies adds to the detail and spaciousness

Vor 13 Tage
Collin Beal
Collin Beal

Transience and rumble. Even if you can't hear the frequencies, it makes the music more impactful because it will feel more audibly spacious and you can feel the frequencies through your body.

Looking at the online available frequency response graphs I question headphone reviews comparing sound quality. The individual frequency response curves vary so much that all sound quality descriptions can only be taken as "Purely" subjective and reviewer personal preference based. I haven't seen any headphone reviews where all headphones were calibrated for +/- 1 db of flat. So, any opinion is a purely subjective indication of personal preferences and would be invalid for any kind of neutral and unbiased recommendation.

The concave shape is to cause all reflections to bounce outward toward the sound deadening material. It is intended to deliver the illusion of infinite space behind the driver for sound to get lost in. Which is why open backs sound better. The question is, how effective is it?
