$15,000 Wood Slab Kitchen Island - One-Man Woodworking Shop

  • Am Vor 3 Monate

    Blacktail StudioBlacktail Studio

This wood slab kitchen island was one of my biggest woodworking projects to date. It was also my first kitchen island/woo countertop project! Made from a single piece of locally salvaged Black Walnut and the voids filled with jet black epoxy resin. This slab started out at nine feet long and over five feet wide. Rough cut by me and the final shape was precision cut by a CNC. I even decided to deliver this one personally and help with the installation. Let me know if you have any questions about the build!

Genius! Way out of my league, though. This is like when you see a beautiful girl on the street, adorable, a figure to die for and you ask yourself, what are my chances? None, obviously. Same here. You have to be an artist to turn this level of craftsmanship out. Hey, I can do a wooden box! Seriously, this is a great video. I like the calm demeanor of the narrator (creator)

Chances are none when you dont try. An artist had his first time trying at some point in time. If he thinks like you he would not been doing that in the first place. PS actually those girls are easier to get because everyone thinks like you and no one approach them....then if you do the right way, you will get it. PSS get a tree and try as well. If you get it wrong, try again. During this process you may become an artist too.

I would choose wood, it adds more character to the space. Especially if you are going to diy. Great job, great narration. Nothing like when see someone who finds their passion for creating things and gets paid doing it. Subscribed af watching this.

I've been watching these type of videos for a while and there's one thing that's been bugging me for a while now.... How come you don't vacuum degass the epoxy before pouring? Sure there will still be bubbles, but far fewer if poured carefully (I would assume, I could be totally wrong here). Regardless, thanks for great and informative videos, enjoy them alot!

Wood, for sure. :) I've always loved that troll comment. It was particularly apt after the pandemic. Parents were desperate for the lockdown to end. DESPERATE for school to be back in session, and when forced to teach, they were petrified. The irony is that the ones who were the most upset with us teachers for being on lockdown were the ones who could afford to stay home with their kids. Those who worked with us were the ones who continued to work in essential aka expendable jobs. I just stumbled onto your video, it was a delightful video start to end.

Not Wood... would not, though that was an amazing piece. I have two daughters, a wife and a dog that would destroy any top made of wood. I'm not sure why anyone would do this unless they just order in/eat out all the time, did this family just not cook very often? Regardless, bravo again sir!

Wood would make a nice countertop wouldn't it. My question is gonna throw you. I'm a bass player. Electric bass guitar. Have you ever worked on making a custom electric guitar or electric bass guitar? And 2 part question. I will be filming instructional videos. How did you find your narrative voice? It's the voice that kept me watching. Yes you don't , eh- hem, shut up, but you also have a pleasant tone and tambre and full of information. Thank you in advance. I'm kidding, choose your questionable comment to respond to. It's 2 parts so you can choose. Thank you, I subscribed.

Wood. Considering your estimate, and the change in dimensions (I assume the client asked for a single slab here...), I think just adding '25% for the 25% increase in size' is not the viable thing to do. (you were talking about matching expectations). A single slab of this lumber from which you can cut the dimensions that are asked might cost considerably more than just the price per square inch of wood... you know, considering trees like this don't just fall out of the sky So realistically - (and I'm not implying this didn't just work out fine in this particular scenario in the end, because it did) - a change like that should reflect the price of the alternate slab at the time of purchase. I understand not raising the price based on epoxy prices and so on (because that is mostly based on planning), but pricing for a slab this size is very much based on availability. And a large increase in size could cost you a few hundred or maybe even a couple grand off of your originally calculated profit. It's not like concrete or epoxy, where you just mix and pour another batch to make up for the extra (or missing) space. (Not to mention the TIME it takes you to LOCATE such a larger piece of lumber that the client likes, and that he or she actually approves of) For instance, if the bigger slab costs you 50% more, since it's a one-off slab from a huge tree, but then you only charge 25% extra because it's 25% more surface area... 'You're cutting yourself in the fingers' (as we say in the Netherlands) Especially when dealing with more high end clients, I think they will understand and appreciate the higher price (IF it's higher of course) when they understand it's because of their unique wants or needs. If anything, the need to obtain this unique / one-off piece of lumber will probably be worth the extra money. Especially if there is a story of where the tree came from, the age of it, perhaps an interesting point about why it was felled and why it is unique... It all adds to the perceived (and actual) value. As long as you are sincere, and don't bullshit them (or take them for suckers or something), my experience is that the more high-end spectrum of clients will understand this completely. It makes your work more of a 'conversation piece' for them. It becomes a story for social occasions and so on. Anyways - beautiful work. And sorry for the long comment. And no, I am not successful myself at the moment. Especially not in your field. But I have picked up some things along the way that seem to apply to a lot of different fields of work. Might as well share, and hope it helps
