US ATC could be clearer in their comms. Why say. For example “Thirty Twenty Eight”. When “Three Zero Two Eight” would be clearer and avoid ambiguity? Not relevant in this incident I know. Just a general question.

Look I am flying 1x per month into JFK. The fault was not only on Delta 300s side. ATC should have insisted on a correct readback. Thats called a closed loop. ATC in the US is sometimes also speaking way too fast and non-standard. Another reason why it is important to read back and for the ATC to closely listen to the read back.

As a pilot, I can assure you that it can get really confusing up there in congested airspace. The 172 pilot was going less than half the speed of those other aircraft, it's not like he can just jump in line with them, nor does he have the same instrumentation and support that they do (not to mention experience). The pilot should have requested vectors, and ATC should have offered a heading at a minimum. The guy was obviously lost and didn't know where he was.

If I were to speculate he just lost situational awareness, after getting fixated on the radio issue. It's happened even to experienced crews, such as the famous Eastern Airlines flight 401 where a crew of 4 crashed after getting fixated on a landing gear bulb breaking.

I live right next to the Miami airport, I can tell you this has happened several times over the years. You legit can see 10 or so planes looping around eastward to and from Miami beach whenever theres some sort of emergency. They usually get diverted to FT lauderdale or west palm beach.

Was the pilot in the wrong? Absolutely. But how does ATC not realize that transmission is being stepped on as you're queueing two planes that have similar callsigns. It's at this point that you enunciate callsigns and not mumble them like usual over awful comms that make everything sound garbled. Obviously they got confused.
