I made a cardboard barn as a display for work... I had never made a scale model before and probably bit off more than i could chew... I cut hundreds of strips of red card stock to look like boards and a bunch of black strips with notches to mimic the asphalt roof. I dry brushed the "boards" to make them look weathered... I spent two weeks cutting and painting, and gluing the whole thing together, strip by strip... and in the end it was perfect.... Then the day after i finished it, while i wasnt there, my boss thought it would look better if the barn door could open and close, so she took a steak knife to it... I nearly cried. If she wanted a functional door, she could have asked for a functional door. I would have built the doors separately and used felt to make hinges. (Or since barn doors slide open, I would have figured something else out.) Instead, she just hacked into my beautiful, perfect barn. Then after the event she needed the display for, she threw the barn in the trash. She asked me to make another one the next year for the same party, and I said no.

I think this would have been a good time to use electroluminescent panels. The leather provides a convenient way to stencil out only the parts you want to glow, after all. The only problem would be needing an external inverter (or to cut a compartment out in the book, of course, but then it loses its book functionality...)

I don' think I would do that to my first edition Harry Potter books. I would retype the text blocks into a word processor and then print them out on high quality paper, or maybe parchment, In the font of my choice, leaving spaces for new artwork and then make new signatures with the appropriate computer program so that I could assemble new text blocks.
