Ben - I enjoy watching your all your other videos (on Tesla and others) - I have a pretty similar setup - I tested mine over a month when I got my powerwall setup live in early 2018 - we did our own solar panel setup - permits and electrical work - mostly for the same reasons you outlined that no one will support you later for maintenance or changes. We have 30 panels (10kW) for a 7.6 kW inverter so we over provisioned the panels to compensate for cloud cover etc. Some of those gaps you see could be a result of cloud cover or the solar inverter switching off thinking the battery was already full - you may have to play with the inverter settings on that depending on what model you have. We also have the 2 powerwalls like in your setup. We replaced all gas appliances (water heater/home heater) with heat pump (100% electric) to use our excess capacity fully.

Ok so the real question. If the grid I’m on is pretty reliable (power almost never goes out), and I get a 1:1 net metering is it worth getting a power wall with my solar considering Tesla is telling me I need 2 power walls. After incentives it would be $10k for solar and $12k for 2 power walls. That’s more than the solar! Power wall or not?

wait ... correct my if my math is off by a football field .. but in 5 days using 985 kWh is like 72000 kWh per year ? .. i mean AC wont be on in winter but heating so i dont know how that effects things .. but i thought our 26000 a year was much (then again i live in south western germany .. still the hottest part of germany but definately not as hot as CA) .. is your AC sucking THAT much ? or are there any "big" electrical appliences you often use that we germans just dont have ? i'm really curious since i never lived in the US or CA speciffically Anyways. Thanks for the video it was really informative ^^ EDIT: it just dawned on me .. you said your 16 panel system with around 5.2 kW peak made that 839 kWh ... is that for the whole week or some error there ? .. because if thats during the 5 day window it means that on average your solar would have generated 167.8 kWh a day wich seems way off (epsecially when day 2 was shown to have 15,4 kWh solar production and 17,9 kWh of home usage .. those numbers seem waaaay to low compared to the almost 1000 kWh used for the "week" .. or from my perspektive it feels like the weekly numbers have a large error in them) Has anyone thoughts on this ? (its 2 AM and i doubt my mind right now XD) EDIT2: yeah i just did a rough estimate .. if your test duration would have consumed 985 kWh within the 110 hours that means on average your house would have sucked about 9kW all day and night long. 😅

Anyone else shocked at the cost of paint $2000 CAD and if not the launch edition AT tires are $2500 CAD. Most other vehicle manufacturers do paint upgrades for $200 and tire swaps for only the difference in cost between the stock tires and the upgrade. Just FYI AT tires are closer to $500 more not $2500 more. I hope after this initial launch, Rivian will provide a version with a 6’4” box, without self driving stuff and glass roof to lower the cost so that we can get the longer range for about the same price.

I own a 2016 model S and my daughter just bought a model Y. We agree with your comments on both cars. Wish you would of given your thoughts on tire wear because on the model S it is awful. I can’t get more than 40,000 miles with good quality tires. They wear out on the inside due to the high camber of the rear wheels. Also for us northerners the loss of range in the winter is significant - up to 25 % on a cold day, but this an issue with all makes of electrical cars

I don't understand people who think the cybertruck is ugly. It's the most badass vehicle of all, and looks like it would eat any other vehicle for breakfast. I mean, would you also say that a stealth bomber is ugly? Seriously? It would be depressing to travel through a timemachine far into the future and see that the vehicles look just like the same old boring clunkers that we see on the road today. When I envision the future, cybertruck fits right in, front and centre.

The Qualcomm comparison doesn't make much sense to me: Qualcomm was successful because they cashed in on their intellectual property (IP). Tesla proposes to license it for free. So to be successfull, Tesla needs to sell hardware incorporating their IP. Now, they made clear they'll be the best manufacturer in the world, so it is clear where they're going. It's not licensing intellectual property.

For an adventure vehicle, 300 miles is not much. 150 miles there and 150 back unless you are where these charging stations going to be. Obviously having them near densely populated areas kind of goes against the adventure thing, so are they going to be near national parks? Also the price of these compares to the high end CyberTruck with 500 miles of range and a huge network of superchargers. I don't think Tesla is worrying.

What would make sense if you want a powerwall for free? Take that $13,000 that it would have costed you to buy it,and instead buying the longest expiration tesla strike option at the money instead that you can afford. Wait one year, sell that option for at minimum of $250,000 to cover the cost of the solar roof/powerwall. I don't like leasing anything, and would never lease anything. Ever. For any reason in the world other than necessity. Anyone tries to give me a comprehensive analysis as to why it would be a good thing, I'll just respond with "It'll be better to not have to pay a monthly bill instead." I'll listen, but then I'll tell you that your idea is awful. Unless its actually better than multiplying your money by at least 100. Patience is a virtue. Patience is rewarded. Follow the hype, get a powerwall/solar roof and pay monthly payments, or be smart and invest into Tesla INSTEAD, then buy what you want later with profit. Not a tough choice from my perspective.

The math is not completly right, you have to take into consideration that to install all of that you needed to put the money right away, while if you kept using regular energy you would only pay a small price every month. The math doesn’t check out because you need to take into consideration how you would invest that money if you hadn’t spend it and how much it would profit to you every month. There are a lot of ways to do this actually, you could consider that the profit would be used to pay the bill and since it probably wouldn’t be enough you would take part of the money that you saved to pay the rest

Great content as always. I hope it goes as well as it did for Qualcomm, I fear they would be transitioning to a market of rip off IP's and run manufacturers now, probably the only reason they haven't been able to rip them off is the battery tech(not just the cell)/inverter and software it too hard to reverse engineer (but rest assured they are working on it, a Telse/Tolsa copy is in the works) . if Qualcomm was born in 2015 I doubt they would have made the transition as the manufacturers to the east steal IP's and get away with it. Even He(Elon) has said this himself stating that the only way to keep them behind is to keep innovating.
