I can totally relate as a Hungarian growing up in Romania and then moving to England when i grew up. I used to speak Hungarian completely fluently when i was a kid but when i was 12 we started only speaking Romanian at home as well so now i sometimes have a hard time remembering words and it's easy for me to interchange them with the Romanian or English equivalent. It is a bit of a shame that it lost it the ability to speak naturally over the years although i could probably pick i t up again if i only spoke Hungarian for a few years. I understand why may adults would call it a shame... it's always good to know more languages and cultures.

I share a similar story but Chinese in the UK. Racism and bullying was more prevalent when my brothers were growing up, so I was lucky it was only a few individuals rather than the entire school. Our parents didn't involve us much in our heritage and allowed us to find our own paths; mostly by working all the time. I'm losing my ability to speak Hakka well and my Cantonese is virtually non-existent, I can listen but reading/writing wasn't taught to me. It's been 13 years for me since I've heard that I English good. I love going to HK to visit. Family, Food, and Culture. And I also feel like a giant. Have been mistaken as other Asian ethnicities before by other Asians...

In defense of Negmia: after the first 2-3 volumes it evolves dramatically from its harem origin roots into one of the more fantastic (and geeky) shonen fighting stories I've read. Unlike a lot of protagonists, Negi wins fights primarily through cleverness, preparation and by asking for help and the story finds a balance between allowing him to be believably precocious and endearingly naive. The mangaka is unabashedly a fan of RPGs and often uses the mechanics of such to explain power dynamics or abilities. The festival arc is absolutely amazing and has the best cover story for a clash of magical heroes and a robot army. And while the harem aspect is never fully abandoned, its worth noting that the class of thirty includes: a robot, a demon hunter, a samurai, two princesses from magical dynasties, an ancient vampire, a mad scientist, an actual demon, a ghost, a ninja and a time-traveling martian (half of these are played straight;) and their school itself is delightfully over the top in terms of clubs, architecture and science. For that matter, both the background architecture and the costume designs are gorgeous. Actually, the everyday clothes the girls wear are shockingly fashionable...I mean, its stuff I could imagine actual 15 year olds wearing. I should also clarify that I didn't read it until I was almost thirty, so the fanservice of teenage girls was creepy for me and something that had to be suffered through. That being said, I think there is sufficient narrative and character development to justify why Negi is at least admired/liked by his students and on his part, his feelings are decidedly not romantic. I don't generally care about romance sub-plots to begin with, but I'll admit its mostly played for camp/comic relief/fanservice as the story delves further into the history of the magical world and escalating battles. One warning: apparently there was conflict between the mangaka and the publishers and the story is abrubtly rushed to an ending that feels both anticlimactic and too pat that fails to answer some major questions. There is a successor series, UQ holder...but its just not as good. The characters just don't shine as much and fall back more heavily on the harem stereotypes and the protagonist is such a generic shonen hero. The cleverness and stakes are also sadly absent as most of the characters are naturally talented and immortal to boot. Further, it retcons the ending of the original series into tragedy and failure.

Oh wow, i relate to this video on a personal level, you know i used to have a asian identity crisis with myself because I didn’t knew my viet culture alot and I didn’t have alot of asian friends to relate to, so i was the only asian person :/ I appreciate this video so much because finally im not the only asian who has the same problem. :P

I'm a Korean American that speak fluent Korean. At the end of the day, you define your heritage. You choose what represents your background, you choose what is Koreaness. Korea itself is right now asking "what is being Korean", and there is no one answer, especially because the solely ethnic definition is going out the window now. Korean culture is going to become more and more flexible. I found that for me, it helped to become more active in Korean social media like naver cafe or start tweeting with Koreans or simply in Korean to practice and such. They use a lot of slang so it's not easy, but on the other hand, doing it in writing and taking it slowly can help you say what you want to say, how you want to say it. Take requests from Korean weebs or something, there's a lot of Korean weebs you can talk to about Anime. And if you fail, well... So what? It's your culture. Make being Korean yours. PS: Can you turn on subtitling? I want to share this to Koreans as well, show them what our life is like, having an American identity.

I definitely relate with a LOT of this, but as a Latino. I think I had an easier time growing up because my parents placed me in a dual-immersion program during elementary school, so by the time I was 12 and started middle school, even though there were not dual-immersion programs anymore, I was already speaking Spanish fairly fluently. But most of my trips to Mexico to visit family were early on before I could speak it well and it was usually very uncomfortable. 9:28 hit me hard, though. I'm not Asian so I've never called myself a twinkie, but I regularly say I'm like white chocolate, white on the inside, brown on the outside. I didn't realize this was something other people did, or much less that other cultures had their own versions. I've never necessarily been "proud" of it, nor have I really ever thought of it as being insecure...I've usually just said it to describe my personality to others. But wow I have a lot to think about now.
